  • An Econometric Model of Farm Tenures in Fifteenth‐Century Florence

    Open Access•Stephen E Pudney, S Pudney et al.•ARTICLE•Economica•1998•Cited by: 2

We estimate a discrete‐choice model of farm tenures in fifteenth‐century Florence, using data in the form of an unbalanced panel, with individual farms nested within landlords’ total property holdings. The probabilities of wage, rental and sharecropping tenures are estimated, allowing for landlord‐specific random effects. Specification tests are used to validate the model. Our results emphasize the role of long‐lived fixed assets (vines), vulnera…

  • Estimating labour productivity in multicropfarming [A product-specific approach]: A product-specific approach

    Francesco L Galassi•ARTICLE•Histoire & Mesure•1996

  • Was feudalism inevitable? A critique of K.G. Persson

    Francesco L Galassi•ARTICLE•Scandinavian Economic History…•1992

In a recent article,1 K.G. Persson has raised a number of interesting problems concerning the tenability of some of the main theses of historical materialism as embodied in G.A. Cohen's defence of the Marxian theory of history.2 In particular, Persson addresses the historical materialist view that feudalism was an inevitable stage in the development of the forces of production. He accepts Cohen's position that purposeful human action can be compa…

  • Buying a passport to heaven: Usury, restitution, and the merchants of medieval Genoa

    Francesco L Galassi•ARTICLE•Religion•1992•Cited by: 3•References: 3

Historians have argued that the ecclesiastic ban on loans at interest delayed the development of capital markets in the middle ages, and have supported this by pointing to well-documented cases of restitutions of usurious gains by famous moneylenders. Strictly, however, such evidence does not prove that usury laws affected lending, because donations by rich bankers may reflect other motivations. If usury laws had an impact, we have to exclude the…
