Hospitality towards European travellers in Latin America in the colonial middle
Hospitality was considered a Christian and humanitarian virtue in the early modern period. This article studies hospitality in eight travel reports by Europeans who travelled Latin America in the colonial middle, i.e. the long seventeenth century. We show that even though an infrastructure of paid lodging had been established, hospitality in private homes continued to be a central form of accommodation. In contrast to early modern Europe, tourism…
A Needle in a Haystack
Seventeenth-century travel accounts written by ordinary people are a rarity. In this article, we analyze the unusual travel report by Gregorio de Robles, a Castilian peasant (labrador) who travelled several European empires in Western Europe and America at the end of the seventeenth and the beginning of the eighteenth centuries. The approach we offer is that of a global microhistory. The aim of this article is mainly methodological: we try to del…

The People Are King
This book by Elizabeth Penry gives a history of ordinary Andeans of the Audiencia de Charcas who, throughout the centuries of Spanish domination, defined themselves by reinterpreting colonial institutions and ideas. It shows how those people struggled to govern themselves and to acquire full rights. It also demonstrates how they moved from ‘a politics of hereditary nobility, the caciques, to a hybrid form of participatory democracy, with the town…
A Case for a History of Ordinary Lives
What is “normal” does not leave major traces. The historiography on colonial Andes is mostly based on trials and petitions, the most detailed sources that historians have to reconstruct the lives of indigenous people, since they include at least part of their voices. However, they show the perspective of native authorities, of exceptional people who wrote or initiated trials, or of people during special conjunctures, such as the rebellions. With …
The emergence of colonial fiscal categorizations in Peru. Forasteros and yanaconas del rey, sixteenth to nineteenth centuries
The article traces the emergence and further development of two related fiscal categorizations concerning indigenous peoples in the viceroyalty of Peru: forasteros and yanaconas del rey. Broadly speaking, both categorizations denoted indigenous people living outside their original communities, generally without access to communal lands, and therefore often characterized as migrants. As we will show, access to land and migration were not always an…

In this article, we analyse some gaps we found in historical sources' information, in the light of the proposal of "internodal" studies. Our main sources were the General Inspection ordered by Viceroy La Palata in 1683 (provinces of Atacama, Lipez and Chichas), and the inspection ordered by Antonio Martinez Lujan de Vargas among the "encomiendas of Tucuman" (puna de Jujuy). We mapped the results and analysed them critically comparing them with tw…

Colonial Organization of Mine Labour in Charcas (Present-Day Bolivia) and Its Consequences (Sixteenth to the Seventeenth Centuries)
This article analyses the changes in the organization of labour during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in colonial Charcas, present-day Bolivia, focusing on the role that different colonial authorities played in this process and its consequences. The Spanish took advantage of the pre-Hispanic organization of labour from the beginning of their conquest. However, in a colonial context, labour relations changed significantly, and the archite…
El tributo andino reinterpretado
The Andean Tribute Reinterpreted: The Case of the Province of Lípez The objective of this study is to analyse the tribute or tax within the series of obligations that were imposed on the indigenous population during colonial times by focusing on one case study: the corregimiento or province of Lípez (in current southwestern Bolivia). Based on what took place in Lípez, we discuss the concepts formulated from a study of the historiography. In parti…
Free and Unfree Labour in the Colonial Andes in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries
This article analyses free and unfree labour in mining centres in the Andes during early Spanish colonial times. It focuses on two themes: the condition of indigenous or “native” people as “free labourers”, and the mita system of unfree labour. For that purpose I shall consider the cases of Potosí, the most important mining centre in the Andes, and San Antonio del Nuevo Mundo in southern Bolivia, a large mine unaffected by the mita system of labo…

Mountain Pastoralism 1500-2000
This special issue of Nomadic Peoples presents a collection of articles that give an idea of the continuities and changes of pastoralism in upland areas during the past five centuries. They are the result of a lengthy project on 'Mountain Pastoralism and Modernity' organized by historians from different continents. The following introduction aims to trace the framework of that enterprise. It takes up a few key concepts: mountain pastoralism, hist…
Mountain Pastoralism in the Andes during Colonial Times
This article summarizes part of the history of the Andean herders during the colonial period. After the conquest, the Spaniards reorganized the American world in order to satisfy their primary needs: food, labor and transportation. During the silver boom of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, Potosí, the most important mining city in the Andes, surpassed 130,000 inhabitants, and there were many other settlements around smaller min…
