Fractured Pasts in Lake Kivu’s Borderlands: Conflicts, Connections and Mobility in Central Africa
The Lake Kivu region, which borders Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, has often been defined by scholars in terms of conflict, violence, and separation. In contrast, this innovative study explores histories of continuities and connections across the borderland. Gillian Mathys utilises an integrated historical perspective to trace long-term processes in the region, starting from the second half of the nineteenth century and reaching…
Laat die gevallen engelen maar liggen: Balansbenaderingen in de Belgische en Nederlandse historiografie over het koloniale verleden
The publication of Engelen uit Europa: A.W.F. Idenburg en de moraal van het Nederlands imperialisme by Hans van der Jagt has generated both praise and fierce criticism. This article attempts to explain this by placing the book’s methodology within international Belgian and Dutch historiography, and within the debates between revisionists and advocates of New Imperial History. More specifically we situate this book within a revisionist strand of i…

Questioning territories and identities in the precolonial (nineteenth-century) Lake Kivu region
Throughout Africa, contemporary boundaries are deemed 'artificial' because they were external impositions breaking apart supposedly homogeneous ethnic units. This article argues that the problem with the colonial borders was not only that they arbitrarily dissected African societies with European interests in mind, but also that they profoundly changed the way in which territoriality and authority functioned in this region, and therefore they aff…

Urbanizing Kitchanga: Spatial trajectories of the politics of refuge in North Kivu, Eastern Congo
This article presents the historical and political trajectory of Kitchanga town in North Kivu, to demonstrate how current\nprocesses of urbanization in a context of civil war in Eastern Congo are strongly intertwined with regional politics of refuge. Kitchanga, an urban agglomeration that emerged from the gradual urbanization of IDP and refugee concentrations, has occupied very different positions through different episodes of the wars, ranging f…
Bringing History Back In: Past, Present, and Conflict in Rwanda and the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo
This article argues that on the borderland between eastern DRC and Rwanda, the past and its representations have been constantly manipulated. The cataclysmic events in both Rwanda and Congo since the 1990s have widened the gap between partial and politicized historical discourse and careful historical analysis. The failure to pay attention to the multiple layers in the production of historical narratives risks reproducing a politicized social pre…
Navigating the Urban “In-Between Space”: Local Livelihood and Identity Strategies in Exploiting the Goma/Gisenyi Border
This chapter starts from an ethnographic study of the urban borderland of Goma (Democratic Republic of the Congo)-Gisenyi (Rwanda), and more specifically the border district Birere. This Congolese urban district is situated right upon the border with Rwanda, and it partly occupies the zone neutre or zone tampon, the natural buffer strip that runs along the border separating the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) from Rwanda. In Birere, the ge…
