This progress has been inspired by Lao religious leaders who are drawing on religious virtues to inspire more benevolent leadership. This religiously inspired vision has produced as a counter narrative to the worst aspects of the historical and cultural dominance of the ethnic Lao over ethnic and re…
Engaging Vietnam and Laos on Religious Freedom
Vietnam and Laos, as the two remaining Communist nations in Southeast Asia, will always occupy a special place in the hearts and minds of Americans due to the complicated legacy of the Vietnam War
Laos and Religious Freedom Studies
Laos is an under-researched state, and religious freedom is an especially under-researched topic. Future research should examine: the extent to which experiences with the free market (especially as it relates to foreign investment), diverse sources of information, foreign educational opportunities, and religious pluralism are preparing the ground for the rule of law in Laos; the understanding of, and response to, religious freedom within the mino…
Foreign Christian Organizations and Social Welfare in Asia
Foreign Christian Organizations (FCOs) and governments can and should work to expand synergies between responsible religious liberty and social well-being and stability. One model is the “insider movement” that has begun among many Hindus, Muslims, and Buddhists. A second model proposes that…

NICHOLAS I, the Iron Czar of Russia, was reputed to have said shortly before his death, I do not rule Russia; ten thousand do. Nicholas, unfortunately, was silent on the extent to which he ruled the ten thousand clerks. For if the ten thousand were his clerks, then he ruled Russia. If they were not his clerks, he did not. More than time and space separates nineteenth-century Russian Czars and modern American Presidents. But time and theory are gr…
