Social Dynamics, Knowledge Spheres, and Technological Transfers in Balearic Island Pottery during the 2nd Millennium b.c
The Middle and Late Bronze Ages can be characterized by an increase in connectivity, and the Balearic Islands are no exception. In order to more deeply explore this phenomenon, we analyze pottery forming processes by studying manufacturing traces, which allow us to observe technological practices and the transfer of technical know-how. Our case study is centered around a technological analysis of the most common type of pottery: a cask shaped ves…
Ethnoarchaeology before Processual Ethnoarchaeology
From a genealogical perspective, this article explores the foundations of ethnoarchaeological research in the context of European colonialism. It investigates methodologies that utilize ethnographic information for reconstructing historical contexts, focusing first on early comparisons during colonial encounters. These comparisons significantly shaped the amalgamation of ethnographic data into archaeology and the formulation of interpretive strat…
Tracing Mobility Patterns of Buried Species of the Late Iron Age Funerary Staggered Turriform of Son Ferrer (Calvià, Spain)
This is the first mobility 87 Sr/ 86 Sr analysis in human remains made on the Balearic Islands. Eight human individuals buried at the same Late Iron Age funerary chamber of Son Ferrer site (Calvià, Mallorca) have been sampled for strontium and oxygen isotopic analysis ( 87 Sr/ 86 Sr and δ 18 O). The study includes strontium and oxygen isotopic analysis of domestic mammals buried in the same Funerary Area (FA1) together with present-day vegetation…
The ways people move
This paper focuses on the study of the communication networks that linked the different Balearic communities during the late Bronze Age. To achieve this goal, weather conditions, sea routes, infrastructures of mobility, naval technology and navigational techniques associated with these movements are reconstructed and analysed. It is argued that communication networks structured the perception of space and time as well as generating a continuous s…
