Poetry, Sound, and Form: A Reply to Eliza Ives
The paper offers some critical comments on Eliza Ives’s essay ‘Sounding Sense and Sensing Sound: “Form-Content Unity” Revisited and Reformulated’. It is suggested that Ives’s intriguing formula ‘sounding sense and sensing sound’ is too narrow a focus for a satisfactory ‘reformulation’ of A. C. Bradley’s account of form-content unity in his lecture ‘Poetry for Poetry’s Sake’. A broader conception of poetic form is proposed, including, but going be…
Fictional entities
By ‘fictional entities’, philosophers principally mean those entities originating in and defined by myths, legends, fairy tales, novels, dramas and other works of fiction. In this sense unicorns, centaurs, Pegasus, the Time Machine and Sherlock Holmes are all fictional entities. A somewhat different category of fictional entities is associated with empiricist philosophy. It includes entities apparently assumed by common discourse but which admit …
Reflections on the Ethics and Aesthetics of Restoration and Conservation
This paper looks at some of the principles behind restoration and conservation applied to ancient artefacts and architecture. A number of case studies are discussed, from medieval stained glass to buildings that have been damaged by fire. The paper ends with some remarks about the conservation of ruins. Underlying the discussion are questions about the kinds of obligations—both ethical and aesthetic—that might constrain the practices of restorati…
History of Aesthetics
The first use of the term aesthetics in something like its modern sense is commonly attributed to Alexander Baumgarten in 1735, although earlier studies in the 18th century by writers such as the third Earl of Shaftesbury (Anthony Ashley Cooper), Joseph Addison, Jean-Baptiste Du Bos, and Francis Hutcheson mark the first systematic inquiries into aesthetics in its familiar sense as a distinct branch of philosophy. Undoubtedly the 18th century saw …
Precis of The Philosophy of Literature
A central question in The Philosophy of Literature is what literature must be like if it is to count as one of the arts. The characterization of literature on offer is a characterization of literature as art. I suppose it might be objected that the characterization simply does not fit the conception of literature in common usage. If that is right – and I do not think it is – then the conclusion would be that literature is not commonly conceived a…
Replies to Attridge, Blackburn, Feagin, and Harcourt
I am immensely grateful for the time and attention that the symposiasts have given to my book. All have raised perceptive and telling points that deserve more detailed responses than I have space here to provide. I feel I should be heartened that they have picked out different issues to discuss (it certainly makes for a more interesting symposium) because it lets me infer that there is no one glaring weakness that careful readers will all identif…
Wittgenstein, Literature, and the Idea of a Practice
The familiar idea that literature is embedded in social practices that help explain both its existence and its value took a distinctive form in analytic philosophy, drawing on speech act theory and a conception of 'rules'. A major influence was John Rawls's seminal paper 'Two Concepts of Rules' (1955) in which he introduced the 'practice conception of rules' according to which certain practices are defined by rules that in turn make possible cert…

Truth, Fiction, and Literature: A Philosophical Perspective
This book examines the complex and varied ways in which fictions relate to the real world, and offers a precise account of how imaginative works of literature can use fictional content to explore matters of universal human interest. While rejecting the traditional view that literature is important for the truths that it imparts, the authors also reject attempts to cut off literature altogether from real human concerns. Their detailed account of f…
