The moment of theory
Progress in Literary Studies
This article argues that literary studies have proceeded in two different ways to establish itself as an academic discipline. One way, the attempt to provide a theoretical basis for a discipline of criticism which would have guaranteed the 'scientific' nature of literary studies, has failed. The other way, the development of a set of standards for scholarship in literary studies and as a part of that the introduction of a method of 'reading' that…
Modes of Interpretation and Interpretative Constraints

Truth, Fiction, and Literature: A Philosophical Perspective
This book examines the complex and varied ways in which fictions relate to the real world, and offers a precise account of how imaginative works of literature can use fictional content to explore matters of universal human interest. While rejecting the traditional view that literature is important for the truths that it imparts, the authors also reject attempts to cut off literature altogether from real human concerns. Their detailed account of f…
Exploring the Written: Anthropology and the Multiplicity of Writing
Reply [to Catherine Belsey]
Ir is a commonplace in semantic theory that has many meanings. One says that words, sentences, and utterances have that a particular action has that life has that smoke means fire, that death of the breadwinner means poverty for his family, that when John spoke of the shameless hypocrite he meant you, that she never means what she says, and that he never says what he means, and so on. These different uses of the term are not tied to any theory; t…
