Open Access•Bertrand Crettez, Régis Deloche et al.•ARTICLE•Rationality and Society•2023•References: 26

On November, 11th, 1630, Queen Marie de' Medici demanded, in vain, that her son, King Louis XIII, dismiss Richelieu as Principal Minister. Historians agree that this crisis known as the Journée des Dupes ( the Day of the Dupes) was the true foundation stone of French "absolutism", but they disagree about whether the decision made by the Queen was rational. We analyze the historical setting of the crisis from a game theory viewpoint where the King…

  • The Paradox of Legal Unification

Bertrand Crettez, Olivier Musy•ARTICLE•Journal of Institutional and…•2021

In the games used to study legal standardization, legal unification is never the outcome of the usual cooperative solution. Given the importance of legal unificationin practice, this property appears as a paradox. To solve this paradox, we resortto alternative notions of cooperation. We show that introducing other-regarding preferences or Kantian rules of behavior does not resolve the paradox except ina very peculiar case. By contrast, we show th…

  • Time-inconsistent preferences and the minimum legal tobacco consuming age

    Open Access•Bertrand Crettez, Régis Deloche•ARTICLE•Rationality and Society•2021•References: 36

In both the United States of America and the European Union, Member States are encouraged to prevent young people from starting to smoke by forbidding selling tobacco products to people under a certain age. By contrast, there are in general no legal minimum age requirements for consuming those products. Our aim is to address such discrepancy from a theoretical viewpoint by focusing on the case where people have time-inconsistent preferences. Spec…

    Open Access•Bertrand Crettez•ARTICLE•OEconomia•2020•References: 4

  • Harold Pinter’s The Caretaker and Cooperative Game Theory

    Open Access•Bertrand Crettez, Régis Deloche•ARTICLE•OEconomia•2018•References: 2

According to Colman (1988), Harold Pinter’s play The Caretaker illustrates the inadequacy of the stable set, a solution concept of cooperative game theory proposed by von Neumann and Morgenstern (1944). We challenge this illustration by pointing out that it is at variance with Pinter scholars’ interpretation of the play. We argue that The Caretaker better illustrates the adequacy of the bargaining set, another solution concept introduced by Auman…

  • An analytic narrative of Caesar's death

    Open Access•Bertrand Crettez, Régis Deloche•ARTICLE•Rationality and Society•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 12

On the Ides of March, 44 BC, in the Senate House of Pompey in Rome, Julius Caesar was assassinated by conspirators, the most famous of those being Brutus. Are there objectively valid reasons to confirm the possibility of a suicidal wish on the part of Caesar raised by Suetonius? By building and solving a two-player non-cooperative game that models the historical strategic aspects of the relationship between Caesar and Brutus, our article shows th…

    Open Access•Bertrand Crettez•ARTICLE•OEconomia•2016

In this ambitious work, which stands at the crossroad of Public Choice and New institutional Economics, Mehrdad Vahabi relies on the concept of predation to revisit the analysis of the genesis of the state, states conflict and the transition from autocracy to democracy. Notwithstanding the introduction, the book begins with a long chapter (chapter 2) on the meaning of predation, in which the author displays an impressive level of erudition (be it…

This paper investigates the impact of demographic shocks and budgetary policy on the welfare of all generations. For this purpose, we build a large scale OLG model that captures most crucial variables for the analysis of population shocks conse- quences in France. We introduce life uncertainty (implying precautionary saving) and a bequest motive (stimulating wealth accumulation at old age) so as to repro- duce realistic wealth profiles per age. T…

  • A theory of the optimal amount of public ownership of land

Open Access•Bertrand Crettez, Claire Loupias et al.•ARTICLE•Recherches économiques de Louvain•1997

A major issue in reforming previously planned economies is the creation of assets markets. In this paper, it is argued that the mere characteristics of the assets to be privatized matter. Indeed, private ownership of land diverts resources from more productive activities. This suggests that for a given economy, there exists an optimal rate of public ownership of land. It is the purpose of this paper to provide a theory of such rate. We make use o…
