Staging Shadows/Seeing Ghosts
Like shakespeare's Macbeth , La señora Macbeth , by Argentine playwright, Griselda Gambaro, "resists easy resolutions" and "comfortable conclusions." this essay examines the 2004 production of the play and the visual, gestural, and spatial vocabulary it utilized to adapt, modify, and layer Gambaro's text (already an original interpretation of the Jacobean play). The Lost Rib

(2) How do the novels portray their female characters? and (3) Why do even those novels whose titles promise female protagonists ultimately focus on other topics and characters?
Women in Hispanic Literature
La Ciudad y Los Perros
Lest there be any doubt about the primacy of the female in this apparently male-dominated novel, let us note that each action within the story, if followed through to its fullest implications, is prompted by a female figure. For example, each of the novel's major characters is interned in the military academy, Leoncio Prado, as a direct result of the disintegration of his association with one or more females. In two different ways the text underl…
Maria and History
ORGE Isaacs' Maria is distinctly not a historical novel, at least Jnot in the sense we generally use the term. On the contrary, Maria patently ignores historical and socio-political events. In fact, with the exception of the stories of Nay and Sinar, the novel rarely acknowledges the existence either of a world outside of the family estates or of events apart from those directly and immediately related to Efrafn and Maria. To a large extent histo…
