  • From Braemar to Hollywood: The American Appropriation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Pirates

Open Access•R J Hill, Laura Eidam et al.•ARTICLE•Humanities•2020

The pirate tropes that pervade popular culture today can be traced in large part to Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1883 novel, Treasure Island. However, it is the novel’s afterlife on film that has generated fictional pirates as we now understand them. By tracing the transformation of the author’s pirate captain, Long John Silver, from N. C. Wyeth’s illustrations (1911) through the cinematic performances of Wallace Beery (1934) and Robert Newton (1950)…

  • Teaching electrodynamic levitation theory

    Open Access•R J Hill, R Hill•ARTICLE•IEEE Transactions on Education•1990

A theoretical approach to teaching the principles of electrodynamic levitation is described. Two theories are used to obtain analytical solutions to predict the performance of a simple MAGLEY arrangement. The first theory, based on Maxwell's equations and vector force relationships, is for a simplified model allowing for a finite-thickness track conductor. The second theory is for a thin plate track and is a straightforward calculation of the lif…

  • A New Academic Marketplace

    R J Hill, Dolores L Burke•ARTICLE•Contemporary Sociology A Journal…•1990

This book examines faculty mobility in the 1980s from the perspective of process and market environment, and makes comparisons between current research findings and those reported by Theodore Caplow and Reece McGee in 1958 in The Academic Marketplace. The present study, like the earlier one, encompasses faculty recruitment, including search and selection procedures and effect, and the circumstances of termination, such as denial of tenure, volunt…

According to Carmichael and Hamilton (1967: 44), the fundamental premise of the black power thesis is that: Before a group can enter the open society, it must first close ranks. By this we mean that group solidarity is necessary before a group can operate effectively from a bargaining position of strength in a pluralistic As they see it, in order to radically improve economic and social well-being, black people must act to deliberately separate t…

Lasch writes: question is whether the ghetto sub-culture gives much support its members.' Lasch immediately provides his own answer this query. It is precisely because the chief characteristics of the ghetto culture are despair and self-hatred that black nationalism has arisen as a radical cultu…

  • French Strategy after de Gaulle

    Open Access•R J Hill, Rickey Hill•ARTICLE•International Journal Canada s…•1968

Attempts to estimate the nature of French strategy in the future suffer from difficulties common to all analyses of French policy at the present time. They turn on assessments of the nature of Gaullism and depend on evaluations of General de Gaulle's success in establishing his system of government in France. No one can say with absolute certainty that he fully understands Gaullist plans, or that he is able to set out all the priorities in French…

The relation of attitude measures to other behavior continues to be problematic. This paper reanalyzes the issue from a methodological point of view. Reconsideration of available evidence suggests that the degree of correspondence observed is at least a function of (1) the measurement technique used, (2) the extent to which the criterion behavior constitutes action within the range of common experience, and (3) the degree to which the criterion b…

A model incorporating direction of deviance, change in group norms, and the social context surrounding the group is developed. Th…
