‘I am a strong man if I can deal with my feelings’: Fatherhood, therapy and emotional becoming
This article examines how contemporary Danish fathers navigate shifting emotional expectations of fatherhood. Drawing on ethnographically informed interviews, we explore how men engage therapeutic vocabularies to reinterpret inherited emotional legacies and craft new paternal identities. Three intensive cases illustrate how therapy becomes a resource for developing emotional reflexivity, reworking boundaries between traditional and emerging mascu…
Standing Firm Against the Stickiness of Care: The Absent Presence of Gender in a ‘Gender-Neutral’ Parenting Course
This article examines how expectant and new Danish parents are positioned within gendered frameworks in universal-access parenting courses. We argue that these courses, despite claims of gender-neutrality, reproduce gender as an absent-present history. On the one hand, the discourse of shared parenting remains prominent, emphasizing the equal importance of both parents. On the other hand, unequal ideals of fatherhood vis-à-vis motherhood continue…
Green fathering in the (m)Anthropocene
This paper examines the concept of green fathering, addressing a gap in research on how the climate crisis influences men’s views on fatherhood and fathering practices. Based on a qualitative study of fathers who live in Danish eco-villages, we explore their concerns, aspirations and commitments to raising children ‘the green way’. Drawing on theories of alternative hedonism and ecological masculinity, we analyse how green fathering is constitute…
Manage your emotions! Encouraging parents to engage in introspective analysis and help seeking
In the Danish context, a more recent risk-preventive parent-child policy agenda has paved the way for an emotionally normative model of parenting support, emphasising parents’ mentalisation capabilities, attachment patterns and emotional self-regulation. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork and interviews, this article examines how frontline workers in Danish health visitor services have not only adopted this agenda but also actively reshaped and ex…
Cultivating parental virtuosi: Therapeutic grammar and neuro-claims in Danish parenting courses
This article analyses how universal parenting courses for first-time parents in Danish municipalities represent measures to cultivate parents’ skills in ‘how to parent’. The aim of such courses is to support all new parents in the transition to parenthood, to teach parents about early child development, and to guide parents in managing their emotions. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork and interviews, we address how the courses end up addressing a…

Gender, Education and Population Flows
During the Danish Presidency for the Nordic Council of Ministers in 2015, attention was drawn towards challenges and best practice examples in relation to gender, education and population flows in peripheral areas throughout the Nordic countries -Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Iceland and the autonomous countries, Greenland, the Faroe Islands and Aaland. This report briefly summarises the findings covered in existing Nordic research and litera…

Introduction: Teaching Gender and Diversity in Higher Education
Teachi ng gender and diversity in higher education is an activity that almost all gender studies scholars are engaged in.In many courses taught today, gender and diversity is a frequently recurring theme whether the teaching activities are part of 'traditional' academic disciplines or part of specific women's and gender studies programmes.Yet, how to teach gender and its intersecting categories is rarely up for debate in academic journals. 1 This…
Place, (In)Equality and Gender
This mapping presents a selected overview of existing research on gender, education and population flows in the Nordic peripheral areas. These areas are faced with a series of challenges that cannot be analyzed nor solved without taking a gender perspective into account. The challenges relate to, for instance, altered living conditions caused by global changes, stagnated or negative economic development, decrease in the amount of workplaces (part…
A strange familiarity? Place perceptions among the globally mobile
How do globally mobile people perceive and make sense of a new place in which they have to create an everyday life for themselves? And how may their place perception be communicated through photographs? These are the questions around which this article revolves. The visual material discussed in the article stems from a participatory research project, in which North Denmark functions as a setting for studying local particularities and global conve…

The Disavowal of Difference: Accessing Class and Symbolic Boundary-Drawing in Interviews
In this article I recount and reflect on methodological issues raised in my research about class representations and symbolic boundary drawing. The article discusses different aspects of accessing class by way of interviews (thereby privileging ‘talk’ as a source of data), the dilemmas involved in conducting the interviews (including the need for paying attention to classed power inherent in the research setting), and the challenges and associate…

Klassernes fortsatte forsvinden
The notion of intersectionality has become important in order to understand the condition of the subject in a society that among other factors are characterized by changing gender relations. The notion relates itself to a society in which categories such as gender, class, ethnicity, age, sexual preferences, etc. interact with each other in novel and a more fluid and fluctuant way than earlier. Even though, internationally, feminist research has b…
