Landraces of spring wheat deliver multiple functions under low-input conditions
Landrace cereals have become more popular among organic farmers in Europe. However, little is known about the response of landraces to environmental conditions and farmers’ management compared to modern cultivars. A co-designed field experiment, informed by Swedish farmers’ experiences of landrace cereals, was used to investigate how traits valued by organic farmers differ between four landrace and three modern varieties of spring wheat (Triticum…
Framing New Art
Performance art is a genre in which artists use their bodies as a medium of expression to create physical presence. Performances revolve around the ambition to create something that transcends existing frames of what is seen as art; its raison d'être is novelty and change. But how is new art established? This article empirically addresses this question by studying performance artists who take part in performance art festivals organized around the…
Saving, sharing and shaping landrace seeds in commons
One of the major challenges facing agricultural and food systems today is the loss of agrobiodiversity. Considering the current impasse of preventing the worldwide loss of crop diversity, this paper highlights the possibility for a radical reorientation of current legal seed frameworks that could provide more space for alternative seed systems to evolve which centre on norms that support on-farm agrobiodiversity. Understanding the underlying norm…
Rendering smallholders social
Drawing on 36 studies in 19 countries and three continents, conducted over forty years, this paper revisits the question of how and why smallholders – and smallholdings – persist in the Global South even under conditions of rapid social and economic transformation. The paper argues that a significant part of the answer to this question can be found by taking a social relational approach: by ‘rendering’ the smallholder social. We identify five soc…
The Archaeology of the Commons
The literature is rich in descriptions of different forms of commons in the later pre-industrial agrarian society of northern Sweden. The industrial era resulted in a noticeable shift in the use of forests and in the introduction of firmer property rights and rigid land boundaries. A large number of commons from the pre-industrial period has never been officially registered and can therefore partly be seen as ‘hidden’ resources. The objective of …
Multiple dimensions of sustainability
The term ‘sustainability’ has exploded in academic writing in recent years and rural studies is no exception. Conceptualising sustainability has meant needing to deal with the entanglements of the social, natural and economic in one frame. The Sustainable Development Goals of Agenda 2030: Transforming our World have been seen as a stunning achievement for having succeeded in marrying goals around economic and/or social development with that of th…
Resurgent back-to-the-land and the cultivation of a renewed countryside
In connection to concerns about, for example, climate change, peak oil, pandemics and the depopulation of many rural areas, there has been a counter-migration from urban to rural areas in past decades. An important part of this counter-migration is the so-called 'back-to-the-land' migration of former urban residents who move to rural areas and adopt primarily agrarian lifestyles. Through a review of 48 migration letters in which migrants write ab…
Cash transfers for sustainable rural livelihoods? Examining the long-term productive effects of the Child Support Grant in South Africa
Cash transfers have received increased scholarly and policy attention, as a means of reducing poverty in the global South. While cash transfers are primarily intended to prevent impoverishment and deprivation, several studies suggest they can have 'productive' impacts, contributing to building sustainable livelihoods. However, pilot projects of unconditional cash transfers have often been too brief or too recent to determine how small, but regula…
Commoning in the periphery – The role of the commons for understanding rural continuities and change
This paper explores how commons reproduce over time and introduces the concept of commoning to discuss rural continuities and change. The point of departure is that commons are essential for local community development in that they have an important role for mediating social change and for local identity production. Through an ethnographic and historical study of a number of commons systems from the village of Ängersjö in the Midwest of Sweden, t…
