  • Statute of Limitations for Tax Evasion

Open Access•Raluca Pavel, Bernur Acikgoz et al.•ARTICLE•Kyklos•2025•References: 34

We investigate the effects of retroactive audits and varying statutes of limitations on tax compliance through a laboratory experiment. First, we solve a dynamic model using Bellman's solution to show that longer limitation periods promote compliance by raising expected penalties, as each past period carries a higher probability of inspection. Second, in our experiment, we manipulate the statute of limitations (0, 1, 3, and 6 periods), providing …

  • The limits of behavioral nudges to increase youth turnout: Experimental evidence from two French elections

Open Access•Rustam Romaniuc, Anaclara Guido et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Behavior &…•2025•References: 11

There is a significant gap in turnout between young people and older voters. The failure to instill a voting habit at an early age may have long term consequences in terms of future political participation as well as on other civic behaviors. Using a pre-registered online experiment with 3790 subjects, we implemented behavioral interventions aiming to stimulate youth turnout in the 2022 French presidential election. We rely on an innovative incen…

  • Beliefs and preferences as predictors of prophylactic adherence and lockdown compliance in South Africa

Stefano Farolfi, Damien Jourdain et al.•ARTICLE•Development Southern Africa•2024

Much of the research on behavioural preferences as predictors of compliance with regulations aimed at reducing the transmission of COVID-19 has focused on developed countries, with very little consideration of African countries. We conduct an online survey (n = 1503) considering beliefs, and individual and social preferences as predictors of compliance with prophylactic measures and lockdown regulations in South Africa. We use incentivized experi…

This paper investigates the relationship between mindfulness and well-being within the context of compliance with prophylactic measures in the time of COVID-19. We conducted a large-scale survey among a representative sample of the French population. We measured mindfulness, using the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale, and the extent to which respondents were impacted by COVID-19 in terms of their mood and quality of sleep, as well as how they co…

  • Regulatory instruments for monitoring ambient pollution

Gastón Giordana, Marc Willinger•CHAPTER•Handbook on Experimental…•2013

In a non-point source pollution situation, the regulator is unable to observe individual emissions, implying that conventional corrective policy instruments are not applicable. Collective penalties are efficient instruments for achieving a collective optimum. While such instruments are difficult to implement in the field (because individual performance cannot be taken into account) they represent a major challenge for the design of environmental …

We evaluate the effectiveness of non optimal and temporally inconsistent incentive policies for regulating the exploitation of a renewable common-pool resource. The corresponding game is an N-person discrete-time deterministic dynamic game of T periods fixed duration.Three policy instruments with parameters that remain constant for the whole horizon are evaluated: a pigouvian tax (flat tax), an ambient tax (ambient flat tax) and an instrument comb…

  • Fair Offers in a Repeated Principal–Agent Relationship with Hidden Actions

    Open Access•François Cochard, Marc Willinger•ARTICLE•Economica•2005•Cited by: 1•References: 22

We test a repeated principal–agent relationship with hidden actions in the laboratory. At each period, the principal offers payments to the agent in order to induce him to provide the high effort level. The agent can accept or reject the offer; if he accepts it, he can choose the high or the low effort level. We observe that offered payments are higher than predicted by the subgame‐perfect equilibrium, and higher in the partners' than in the stra…

[eng] The Irreversibility Effect (IE) predicts that an expected utility maximizer who expects to obtain additional information before his future choices, will choose a "more flexible" (or "less irreversible") position in the current period. Results of an experimental investigation of the IE are presented. The aim of this study was to provide empirical evidence about the IE without making specific assumptions about the agents' behavior. Our result…
