  • Managing Reverberant Acoustics in Singing by Extending the Plosive Closures in Vowel–Plosive–Vowel Sequences

Allan Vurma, Einar Meister et al.•ARTICLE•Music Perception An Interdisciplina…•2026

Poor intelligibility of sung text often occurs in reverberant rooms due to masking by the reverberation tail of the singer’s voice. This study investigates whether elongating the plosive closure phase can improve the recognition of voiceless plosives in vowel–plosive–vowel sequences sung in reverberant rooms. We hypothesize that a longer plosive closure allows the reverberation tail from the preceding vowel to decay before the plosive burst, thus…

  • Vokaalide ja klusiilide intensiivsussuhted laulmisel teksti arusaadavuse mõjutajana

Open Access•Allan Vurma, Tuuri Dede et al.•ARTICLE•Mäetagused•2023•Referências: 2

Aim. The objective of this study is to ascertain (1) whether there is a tendency in operatic singing by which, compared to speaking, the intensity of all speech sounds is greater, but the intensity of voiceless plosive bursts increases proportionally less than that of vowels, which may make the recognition of plosives more difficult; and (2) whether pronouncing the bursts of voiceless plosives more strongly would improve their recognition. Method…

  • Developmental Changes in Acoustic Characteristics of Speech of Estonian Adolescents

Open Access•Einar Meister, Lya Meister•ARTICLE•Folklore Electronic Journal of…•2023

The paper introduces the Estonian Adolescent Speech Corpus and explores the developmental changes in speech production based on acoustic characteristics of fundamental frequency (F0), formant frequencies, and speech tempo as a function of age and gender. Age- and gender-related anatomic changes in adolescence have implications for speech acoustics: a sudden drop of F0 at puberty in boys, and an almost gradual decrease of the acoustic vowels space…

  • Spectral and temporal properties of Estonian palatalization

Open Access•Anton Malmi, Pärtel Lippus et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the International…•2023•Citada por: 1•Referências: 33

The aim of this paper is to describe and compare the spectral and temporal properties of Estonian palatalized and non-palatalized consonants /l n s t/ and the vowels that precede them. Acoustic recordings of 43 native Estonian subjects producing word pairs where palatalization differentiated meaning were analyzed in this study. We offer a new perspective on how palatalization is realized by employing a dynamic analysis of the formant trajectories…

  • Articulatory properties of Estonian palatalization by Russian L1 speakers

Open Access•Anton Malmi, Pärtel Lippus et al.•ARTICLE•Eesti ja soome-ugri keeleteaduse…•2022

We studied the articulatory and temporal properties of Estonian palatalization by Russian L1 Estonian L2 speakers and compared the results to Estonian native speakers. The tongue movement of 24 Russian L1 and 21 Estonian L1 speakers were recorded with an electromagnetic articulograph. The speakers articulated phonologically contrastive word pairs and i-stemmed nouns where the final consonant was palatalized. Previous research has shown that palat…

Artikli I osas uurisime põhitooni sageduse muutumist eesti laste kõnes (Keel ja Kirjandus 2017, nr 7, lk 518–533), II osas keskendume vokaalide akustilistele omadustele. Klassikaliselt kirjeldatakse vokaalide akustilist kvaliteeti spektraalsete tunnuste – formantide ehk kõnetrakti resonantssageduste abil. Vokaalide hääldamisel varieerub kõnetrakti kuju sõltuvalt alalõua, keele ja huulte asendist ning sellest tulenevalt võimenduvad kõnetraktis e…

  • Eesti laste kõne I

    Open Access•Einar Meister, Lya Meister•ARTICLE•Keel ja Kirjandus•2017

Teadmised eesti keele foneetikast pärinevad valdavalt täiskasvanud keelejuhtide kõne uuringutest (vt Asu jt 2016; Eek 2008). Ka eestikeelse kõnetehnoloogia (eelkõige kõnetuvastuse) arendamisel on treeningmaterjalina kasutatud ainult täiskasvanute kõnet, seetõttu ei saa automaatne kõnetuvastus kuigi hästi hakkama laste kõne tuvastamisega. Eestis uuritakse aktiivselt väikelaste kõne arengut, kusjuures peamine fookus on sõnavara, morfoloogia ja gram…
