  • Between Analysis and Metaphor

    Open Access•Jakob Helmut Deibl•ARTICLE•Humanities•2025

This article identifies different forms of poetic transport—understood in the sense of metaphor, transition, transfer, crossing and translation—in Hölderlin’s poem “Patmos”. There are several motifs scattered throughout the poem that semantically express a transition using highly metaphorical language: motifs reflecting on the mediation between the divine and the human, signalling the hybridization of Greek and Christian religion, and indicating …

  • Aesthetic Constellations of Noah’s Ark

    Open Access•Jakob Helmut Deibl•ARTICLE•Interdisciplinary Journal for…•2024

This article considers Noah’s ark as a motif of the biblical text that travels through numerous other (not least philosophical) discourses. Not only have there been countless references to the motif of the ark in the biblically inspired tradition for centuries, it is also associated with the logical operations of encompassing the dispersed, the entry into reflection, and the aspect of order. The ark functions as a means, a house, a ship, a cave, …

  • The divine and the open text

    Open Access•Jakob Helmut Deibl•ARTICLE•The German Quarterly•2024

This article deals with Hölderlin's Homburger Folioheft . It elaborates on the thesis that the question of God or the divine can contribute to exploring both the richness of the poet's extensive manuscript, which fans out in many textual stages, and its fragmentary form. I argue that, despite its fragile textual form, the collection must be perceived as a unity and that reading it means oscillating between the textual stages without privileging t…

  • Transformation of Religion

Marianne Grohmann, Martin Fieder et al.•BOOK•Transformation of Religion•2023

This volume presents different approaches to the concept of religion. Religion in modern societies is undergoing accelerated change. Traditional religious forms are dissolving and being overlaid with or replaced by new ones. This poses particular challenges for analyses of the current religious situation, which already presuppose an understanding of religion. But it is precisely this that is disputed in academic discourse about it. Against the ba…

  • Speaking of God in the Realm of Aesthetics

    Open Access•Jakob Helmut Deibl•ARTICLE•Religions•2023•References: 16

This article considers the work and reception of Friedrich Hölderlin with regard to the impact of German Idealism on religion. To this end, two questions must be clarified in advance: can Hölderlin, who is known primarily as a poet, also be placed in the context of German Idealism, and does his work have a significant relationship to religion? I argue that both questions should be answered in the affirmative. Ernst Cassirer's study Hölderlin und …

  • Sacred Architecture and Public Space under the Conditions of a New Visibility of Religion

    Open Access•Jakob Helmut Deibl•ARTICLE•Religions•2020•Cited by: 4•References: 9

Embedded in the paradigm of the "New Visibility of Religion," this article addresses the question of the significance of sacred buildings for public spaces. 'Visibility' is conceived as religion's presence in cities through the medium of architecture. In maintaining sacred buildings in cities, religions expose themselves to the conditions of how cities work. They cannot avoid questions such as how to counteract the tendency of public space to ero…

Open Access•Jakob Helmut Deibl, Jakob Deibl et al.•ARTICLE•Interdisciplinary Journal for…•2018

The introductory remarks of the issue J-RaT 7 function as an invitation to deal with the topic of the Crisis of Representation. The Crisis, in this context, has not only a political and economic dimension, but a cultural, aesthetic and religious one as well. Thus, a serious inquiry into this complex and multidimensional phenomenon requires an interdisciplinary approach. The issue targets the phenomena at hand through 15 contributions. One common …

  • Interpretation und Bündnis

    Open Access•Jakob Helmut Deibl•ARTICLE•Interdisciplinary Journal for…•2016

This article asks for the genuine resources of the Christian narrative against fundamentalist tendencies within (Christian) religion. It presupposes that critical reflection on religion and reflection within religion cannot be separated from each other: Critique of religions and illumination processes within them must always be combined. In the first chapter I examine three types of fundamentalism according to three main questions highlighted by …
