  • Stable Lead Isotope Studies of Black Sea Anatolian Ore Sources and Related Bronze Age and Phrygian Artefacts from Nearby Archaeological Sites. Appendix

    Open Access•Edward V Sayre, E C Joel et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2001

The accumulated published database of stable lead isotope analyses of ore and slag specimens taken from Anatolian mining sites that parallel the Black Sea coast has been augmented with 22 additional analyses of such specimens carried out at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Multivariate statistical analysis has been used to divide this composite database into five separate ore source groups. Evidence that most of these ore sourc…

  • Analytical Investigation of Archaeological Powders From Göltepe (Turkey)

    Open Access•Annemie Adriaens, P VENY et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•1999•Cited by: 1•References: 4

Nine powder samples originating from the archaeometallurgical she in Göltepe, southern central Turkey, have been analysed. Bulk analyses, using X‐ray fluorescence and X‐ruy photoelectron spectroscopy, and single particle analyses, using electron probe X‐ray microanalysis, were carried out. The analyses were focused on determining the inorganic elemental composition of the samples and the distribution of particle types in the nine powder samples. …

  • Hacinebi Metal Production and Exchange

    Hadi Özbal, A Adriaens et al.•ARTICLE•Paléorient•1999•Cited by: 11•References: 3

Excavations from the pre-Uruk levels at Hacinebi yielded a complete repertoire of archaeometallurgical finds including ores, slags, crucible fragments with accretions, molds, a tuyere, metal artifacts, as well as a multi-furnace metal workshop. The highly advanced metal technology at Hacinebi is in accordance with other Late Chalcolithic local Anatolian sites. Anatolian metals may have aroused Mesopotamian interest and the Uruk trade networks may…

  • Early Bronze Age Tin Processing at Kestel/Göltepe, Anatolia

    Open Access•B Earl, Hadi Özbal•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•1996•Cited by: 3•References: 6

Chemical analysis of statistically significant numbers of samples including minerals, sediments, soil, host rock as well as powdered materials, crucible accretions and metal artefacts revealed information about the distribution of cassiterite at Kestel and the tin smelting processes that took place at Göltepe c. 2600 BC. Using the ancient technique of vanning for the isolation of tin ore (cassiterite), followed by assaying by blowpipe/charcoal bl…

  • Tin in the Turkish Taurus mountains

    Open Access•K Aslihan Yener, K Aslıhan Yener et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•1987•Cited by: 10•References: 12

The sources of tin in the ancient Near East have been a long-standing puzzle. Anatolia is a key area, for it has copper in vast quantities, and silver. Since no substantial or workable deposits of tin seemed to exist in Turkey, an external source for tin bronzes in Anatolia has seemed necessary. The new finds reported here change that picture, as they reveal a major source of the metal in the Taurus mountains, on the south coast of Anatolia
