Open Access•Luciana Martins, Karen Badaraco Costa et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2023

The study of disarticulated ossicles of recent sea cucumbers from Campos Basin, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from various Holocene strata, obtained by micropaleontological methods, resulted in the identification of at least eight holothurian taxa, belonging to the five of the seven orders of Holothuroidea: Apodida (Synaptidae, Chiridotidae), Dendrochirotida (Psolidae and Cucumariidae), Holothuriida ( Holothuria), and Molpadiida (Molpadiidae, Eupyrgida…

  • Nísia Floresta e o pioneirismo “invisível” do feminismo brasileiro

Open Access•Amanda André De Mendonça, Luciana Martins et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Interinstitucional Artes…•2021

    Open Access•Luciana Martins•ARTICLE•Journal of Material Culture•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 21

This article focuses on the global traffic in images relating to Kadiwéu culture in South America, analysing the extent to which they are entangled in the group's continuing sense of presence. It begins with Kadiwéu designs as they appeared in the sketchbook of the artist-explorer Guido Boggiani in the late 19th century. It then explores the mapping of Kadiwéu territory and the practices and protocols informing a politics of land rights, cultural…

  • Resemblances to archaeological finds: Guido Boggiani, Claude Lévi-Strauss and Caduveo body painting

    Luciana Martins•ARTICLE•Journal of Latin American…•2017•Cited by: 3•References: 1

In 1942, Claude Lévi-Strauss published an article on Caduveo body painting in the first number of the surrealist magazine VVV, with the editorial assistance of André Breton and cover by Max Ernst. In the article, Lévi-Strauss uses the photographs of the Caduveo women taken during his fieldtrip in 1935–36, together with drawings of facial designs collected to reflect on their ‘strong originality’, which ‘evokes a very ancient culture, and one full…

  • Geographical Exploration and the Elusive Mapping of Amazonia

    Open Access•Luciana Martins•ARTICLE•Geographical Review•2012•Cited by: 5•References: 18

In this article I reexamine Alexander Hamilton Rice's seventh expedition to Amazonia (1924–1925) in order to highlight the ways in which the image of the modern explorer was constructed through various technologies of visualization, including maps, still photography, and film. The Rice expedition was equipped with the latest surveying instruments, among them a hydroplane especially adapted for taking aerial photographs, and it was the first to at…

  • “The Struggle for Luxuriance”: William Burchell Collects Tropical Nature

Luciana Martins, Luciana Stadniki Martins et al.•CHAPTER•Tropical Visions in an Age of…•2005

This chapter focuses on Burchell's attempt to capture the pattern of a tropical nature—not only in his collections of natural objects such as plants and animals but also in his creation of proxy specimens in the form of precise calibrated drawings. For Burchell, as for Humboldt, the art of visual representation—the depiction of nature's forms—was a vital tool of scientific description. The chapter is concerned with the practices of naturalists an…

  • Views and Visions of the Tropical World

Felix Driver, Luciana Martins et al.•CHAPTER•Tropical Visions in an Age of…•2005

This book brings together contributors from various disciplinary backgrounds—principally, art history, cultural geography, literature, imperial history, and the history of science—to consider the visualization of the tropical world. This book is especially concerned with the ways in which “the tropics” have been represented as something to be seen—a view to be had or a vision to be experienced. In the book, spaces of the tropics have been imagine…

  • Tropical Visions in an Age of Empire

Felix Driver, Luciana Martins et al.•BOOK•Tropical Visions in an Age of…•2005•Cited by: 58

Book synopsis: The contrast between the temperate and the tropical is one of the most enduring themes in the history of the Western geographical imagination. Caught between the demands of experience and representation, documentation and fantasy, travelers in the tropics have often treated tropical nature as a foil to the temperate, to all that is civilized, modest, and enlightened. Tropical Visions in an Age of Empire explores images of the tropi…

  • John Septimus Roe and the Art of Navigation, c. 1815–1830

Felix Driver, Luciana Martins•ARTICLE•History Workshop Journal•2002•Cited by: 1

In this paper, we consider the ways in which practices of drawing and surveying shaped the geographical imagination of British mariners in the tropics. The art of navigation involved a variety of skills, notably sketching and mapping. The history of naval survey and hydrography is often written from the centre, a more‐or‐less halting narrative of science, government and empire in which prominent naval officials hold the stage. Here, we start with…

This paper considers how European voyagers both engaged with and reconstructed the tropical landscapes they encountered. By examining visions of the Brazilian landscape produced by Charles Darwin during his Beagle voyage, the paper aims to explore the complex interaction between prior knowledge, aesthetic convention and the experience of travelling in the construction of his geographical imagination. While the resulting images necessarily shared …
