Implementation of LGBTQ+ affirming care policies in the Veterans Health Administration
Background: In the United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), veterans who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and similar gender and sexual minoritized people (LGBTQ+) experience health disparities compared to cisgender, heterosexual veterans. VA's LGBTQ+ Health Program created two healthcare policies on providing LGBTQ+ affirming care (healthcare that is inclusive, validating, and understanding of the LGBTQ+ population). The…
Building a Community of Anthropological Practice
The disciplinary contribution of anthropologists employed outside traditional anthropology departments has been a topic of discussion and debate in the field for nearly a century. Alongside industry, nongovernmental, and nonprofit career paths, an increasing number of anthropologists have developed productive research careers outside of academic anthropology departments. The United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), which provides health…

Telephone veteran peer coaching for mental health treatment engagement among rural veterans
PURPOSE: To determine the effectiveness of telephone motivational coaching delivered by veteran peers to improve mental health (MH) treatment engagement among veterans. METHODS: Veterans receiving primary care from primarily rural VA community-based outpatient clinics were enrolled. Veterans not engaged in MH treatment screening positive for ≥1 MH problem(s) were randomized to receive veteran peer-delivered feedback on MH screen results and refer…
Factors Affecting Adoption of Coordinated Anxiety Learning and Management (Calm) in Veterans’ Affairs Community‐Based Outpatient Clinics
PURPOSE: Many US military veterans experience anxiety, depression, and trauma-related disorders. A major goal of the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) has been to increase access to evidence-based psychotherapies (EBPs) such as cognitive-behavioral therapy to address veterans' substantial health burden. However, despite widespread implementation of EBPs throughout the VHA, smaller clinics that often serve rural veterans face barriers to delive…
Adapting Caring Contacts for Veterans in a Department of Veterans Affairs Emergency Department
Transitions in care, such as discharge from an emergency department (ED), are periods of increased risk for suicide and effective interventions that target these periods are needed. Caring Contacts is an evidence-based suicide prevention intervention that targets transitions, yet it has not been widely implemented. This pilot study adapted Caring Contacts for a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) ED setting and population, created an implementati…

An Evidence‐Based Model for Disseminating‐Implementing Coordinated Anxiety Learning and Management in Department of Veterans Affairs’ Community‐Based Outpatient Clinics
PURPOSE: To explore the feasibility and utility of using a workshop, and supervision-consultation plus external facilitation to disseminate and implement cognitive-behavioral therapy in Veterans Affairs (VA) community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs). METHODS: This study occurred in the context of a randomized controlled trial aimed at comparing 2 methods for implementing Coordinated Anxiety Learning Management (CALM) in VA CBOCs. A 3-phase (work…
It’s been like a miracle”
This article reports qualitative results from a mixed-methods evaluation of the Arkansas Health Care Independence Program. Qualitative data was collected using telephone interviews with 24 low-income Arkansans newly enrolled in Medicaid or a Qualified Health Plan in 2014. We used methods developed for rapid qualitative assessment to explore a range of general barriers and facilitators to accessing health care services. Secondary analysis guided b…
A Method for Developing Trustworthiness and Preserving Richness of Qualitative Data During Team-Based Analysis of Large Data Sets
This article outlines a three-phase, team-based approach used to analyze qualitative data from a nation-wide needs assessment of access to Veteran Health Administration services for rural-dwelling veterans. The method described here was used to develop the trustworthiness of findings from analysis of a large qualitative data set, without the use of analytic software. In Phase 1, we used templates to summarize content from 205 individual semistruc…

The Engineer
This chapter examines the ways that McCulloch’s new research culture at MIT’s Research Laboratory of Electronics shaped the evolution of his scientific identity into that of an engineer. This was an open, fluid, multidisciplinary culture that allowed McCulloch to shift his focus more squarely onto understanding the brain from the perspective of theoretical modelling, and to promote the cybernetic vision to diverse audiences. McCulloch’s practices…
Pre‐Implementation Strategies to Adapt and Implement a Veteran Peer Coaching Intervention to Improve Mental Health Treatment Engagement Among Rural Veterans
PURPOSE: Telephone motivational coaching has been shown to increase urban veteran mental health treatment initiation. However, no studies have tested telephone motivational coaching delivered by veteran peers to facilitate mental health treatment initiation and engagement. This study describes pre-implementation strategies with 8 Veterans Affairs (VA) community-based outpatient clinics in the West and Mid-South United States to adapt and implemen…
Using Community Advisory Boards to Build Partnerships and Develop Peer-Led Services for Rural Student Veterans
Peer-led services are an ideal way to connect student veterans and link them to resources and health care services. Partnerships can facilitate grassroots efforts to develop local services that meet the needs of diverse student veteran populations

The Materials of Science, the Ideas of Science, and the Poetry of Science’
This essay explores the relationship between neurophysiologist and cybernetician Warren S. McCulloch (1898–1969) and one of his most important collaborators, neurophysiologist Jerome Y. Lettvin (1920–2011). Lettvin met McCulloch in 1941 as a medical student at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where McCulloch was associate professor of psychiatry. Lettvin recalled that it was McCulloch’s influence that led him to study the nervous system; ho…

Syndemics, sex and the city
(Physio)logical circuits
This article examines the intellectual and institutional factors that contributed to the collaboration of neuropsychiatrist Warren McCulloch and mathematician Walter Pitts on the logic of neural networks, which culminated in their 1943 publication, "A Logical Calculus of the Ideas Immanent in Nervous Activity." Historians and scientists alike often refer to the McCulloch-Pitts paper as a landmark event in the history of cybernetics, and fundament…
