Attentional Dynamics During Emotional Face Processing Differentiate Alexithymia From Mood and Affective Symptoms

Mood and affective symptoms are often confounded with alexithymia due to the typical assessment through self-report. Performance measures may allow a more objective assessment of alexithymia. Validating the Stanford Gender-Related Variables for Health Research (SGVHR) in a Canadian population
In addition to biological sex, the impact of gender on health outcomes is now well-recognized. Gender norms are changing rapidly, demanding contemporary gender assessment tools. This study sought to validate the recent US-based Stanford Gender-Related Variables for Health Research (SGVHR) scale in Canada. We also aimed to improve gender prediction by including socio-demographic information on education, income and occupations. We recruited 2445 C…
Gender predictors of adverse health
Women differ from men in many health indicators. We tested the extent to which such differences can be explained by gender constructs in a representative Canadian cohort ( N = 2423). Institutionalized gender (education, income) and seven gender domains (e.g., perceived discrimination, work strain, caregiver strain) were assessed in their association with scales assessing health and well-being, and in several self-reported health conditions. Women…

Effects of acute exercise on emotional memory
Research has demonstrated beneficial effects of acute exercise on memory for neutral materials, such as word lists of neutral valence/low arousal. However, the impacts of exercise on emotional memory is less understood. Across three laboratory experiments in college students, we tested if acute exercise could enhance both neutral and emotional memory performance, anticipating a greater effect for emotional memory. We examined effects of exercise …
The Impact of the Oil Palm on Adat Social Structure and Authority
Using a case study of the election of an adat head (kepala adat) in a Medang Dayak community in East Kalimantan, Indonesia, this study investigates the effect of large-scale oil palm land acquisition on the social structure of an adat community in terms of the ability of adat leaders to consolidate their positions within the social hierarchy. The findings highlight that the introduction of the oil palm to the community has weakened adat authority…
