  • Arms control as a part of strategy: The Warsaw Pact in MBFR negotiations

    Christoph Bluth•ARTICLE•Cold War History•2011•Cited by: 2•References: 5

New archival materials have become available that allow us to test the conventional interpretation of Warsaw Pact policy towards conventional arms reductions in Europe. They shed new light on the objectives of the Eastern side in talks on mutual and balanced arms reductions, how it approached the dispute over the assessments of the military balance and sought to preserve its advantages while constraining West German military capabilities, and dem…

  • The Irrelevance of ‘Trusting Relationships’ in the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty: Reconsidering the Dynamics of Proliferation

    Open Access•Christoph Bluth•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Politics…•2011•References: 7

In a recent paper Jan Ruzicka and Nicholas J. Wheeler have posited that the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) is an example of several ‘trusting relationships’. The authors assert that ‘since the end of the 1990s the trusting relationships embodied in the NPT have come under strain’ and that this accounts for the fact that the ‘treaty is facing growing pressures that are eroding what has been an effective barrier to nuclear weapons prolifera…

  • The British road to war: Blair, Bush and the decision to invade Iraq

    Open Access•Christoph Bluth•ARTICLE•International Affairs•2004•References: 3

The British decision to go to war against Iraq with the United States has been widely criticized for being based on inaccurate and exaggerated assessments of the threat posed by Iraq. This article shows that the case for military action made by the British government was based on a measured analysis of the threat, on the conviction that the continued containment of Iraq through sanctions was not effective or morally acceptable, and that the human…

  • Reconciling the Irreconcilable: Alliance Politics and the Paradox of Extended Deterrence in the 1960s

    Christoph Bluth•ARTICLE•Cold War History•2001•Cited by: 2

One of the central dilemmas of Alliance politics during the Cold War was that the US security guarantee given to European members of the NATO Alliance created a sharp conflict with US national security interests as the US became increasingly vulnerable to Soviet strategic nuclear forces. The result were long drawn out negotiations to develop a strategic concept that would at least appear to reconcile the differences between European and US securi…
