Purity at What Price
Purity in religion is an elusive prize. Just ask the Lutherans. From the birth of the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod (LCMS) in 1847, its rallying cry was reine Lehre (pure doctrine), as defined by president and founder C. F. W. Walther. For him, that meant a dogged insistence on an infallible Bible and Luther's own teaching, uncorrupted by later rationalism. But by the late 1960s, some LCMS conservatives suspected that rationalism and liberalism,…

Tornado God: American Religion and Violent Weather
One of the earliest sources of humanity’s religious impulse was severe weather, which ancient peoples attributed to the wrath of storm gods. Enlightenment thinkers derided such beliefs as superstition and predicted they would pass away as humans became more scientifically and theologically sophisticated. But in America, scientific and theological hubris came face to face with the tornado, nature’s most violent windstorm. Striking the United State…
Bible in American Life
There is a paradox in American Christianity. According to Gallup, nearly eight in ten Americans regard the Bible as either the literal word of God or inspired by God. At the same time, surveys have revealed gaps in these same Americans' biblical literacy. These discrepancies reveal the complex relationship between American Christians and Holy Writ, a subject that is widely acknowledged but rarely investigated. The Bible in American Life is a sust…
American Christians and the Emptiness of Death
My office is the antithesis of emptiness. I am not sure how many books I have managed to cram into a 9 by 12 room, but suffice it to say I have used every available space, even to the point of violating the university's fire code. A year ago, when the fire marshal came around for a routine inspection, he informed me that I could not stack books all the way to the ceiling on top of 6-foot bookshelves but had to leave at least 12 inches' clearance.…

"The "African Enslavement of Anglo-Saxon Minds: The Beechers as Critics of Augustine
Harriet Beecher Stowe, who achieved international fame for her 1852 antislavery novel,Uncle Tom's Cabin, is best known to historians of American religious thought as a critic of New England Calvinism and its leading light, Jonathan Edwards. But in airing her frustrations with the Puritan tradition, Stowe also singled out a much earlier source of the problem: Augustine, the fifth-century bishop of Hippo. At his worst, Augustine typified for Stowe …

Some Scripture Is Inspired by God: Late-Nineteenth-Century Protestants and the Demise of a Common Bible
A New Testament which Needs neither a Glossary nor a Commentary." So proclaimed the New York Evening Post on 21 May 1881, in a front-page story announcing the publication of the Revised Version of the Scriptures. The first major English translation since the King James Bible, the Revised New Testament was billed as the most accurate version ever, and the Post writer did not hesitate to hyperbolize. The printing of the Revision, the reporter decla…
