  • Reading Celan Today

    Natalie Lozinski-Veach, Jason Groves•ARTICLE•The Germanic Review Literature…•2023

The recent venerations of Paul Celan on the occasion of his centenary invite further reflection on how his poems reach across time. As immersed as they are in their own here and now, Celan's poems demonstrate a remarkable capacity to touch on others' histories and experiences and to be touched by them in turn. Drawing on the elaborations of touch in transnational German studies, and the ways in which touch apprehends relations that fall outside o…

  • Low Tide, Black Shoals

    Jason Groves•ARTICLE•The Germanic Review Literature…•2023

While Paul Celan’s lyrical commemoration of the Holocaust has been recognized for its multidirectionality, commentators have not acknowledged his engagement with other colonial and imperial histories contemporaneous with his writing. Celan’s advocacy for reading words “with the acute accent of the present” calls for a reading of his poetry that is attentive to its evocations of, and silence around, multiple histories of racial violence. Recognizi…

Literary writing has operated as a space of inquiry unsettling the literal and figurative ground on which thinking takes place. From Hölderlin's invocations to the ether, to Walter Benjamin's characterization of Baudelaire's poetry as unfathomable, a certain tradition of writing, particularly in German letters, takes shape around a critique of gravity. Against the background of a geopoetics, I propose to turn to the question of an inconstant and …

  • The Ecology of Invasions

    Jason Groves•ARTICLE•The Global South•2009•References: 4

To address the present and future ecologies of war, this paper presents the development of ecology as war. The radical reconfiguration of plant and animal communities in the 20 th and 21 st centuries, fuelled by economic globalization, has led to the militarization of ecosystems in biological discourse. Beginning with a re-reading of ecologist Charles S. Elton's groundbreaking study, The Ecology of Invasions in Plants and Animals (1958), this pap…

  • Writing Under the Influence

    Jason Groves•ARTICLE•Modern Language Notes•2007

The Theater and the Plague" contains an astonishing written account of the plague. Antonin Artaud's essay replicates the plague in writing by developing what could be called a "malignant" rhetoric. In this article, the possibility of a pathogenic writing is considered by tracing the transformation of influence, relation, and communication into virulent vectors of the plague. The theater, for Artaud, erupts out of this space between a dramatic, rh…
