Examining indicators of hunter-gatherer mobility in arid environments: The example of the final Middle Paleolithic site of Besor 37 (Northern Negev, Israel)
Besor 37 is an open-air site in the northwestern Negev Desert (Israel). Excavations at the site in 2020 uncovered a rich, in situ Middle Paleolithic assemblage composed of flint and limestone artifacts, animal bones and charcoal. The good preservation of the site is due to its rapid burial by overbank deposition of fluvially reworked loess. Dating using both Optically Stimulated Luminescence and 14 C suggests an average age of 46.6 ± 2.4 ka. Usin…
D hypothetical reconstruction of a Neolithic hut from the waterlogged site of La Draga (Banyoles, Spain)
This paper presents a hypothetical digital reconstruction of a prehistoric wooden hut from the archaeological site of La Draga (Banyoles, Northeast Iberia). La Draga is a waterlogged Early Neolithic settlement (ca. 7300-6700 years ago), located on the eastern shore of lake Banyoles, and presents an extraordinary preservation of wood and vegetal materials usually not recovered in prehistoric archaeology. The wooden architectonical elements recover…

The exploitation of mountain natural resources during the Iron Age in the Eastern Pyrenees: The case study of production unit G at Tossal de Baltarga (Bellver de Cerdanya, Lleida, Spain)
The Iron Age site of Tossal de Baltarga (Bellver de Cerdanya) was a large Iberian residential complex occupying a strategic position in the middle of the Eastern Pyrenees. It was destroyed by fire in the second half of the 3rd century BCE, preserving an important volume of archaeological and bioarchaeological material in certain areas. This is the case of Building G, a two-story construction whose violent blaze has offered the possibility of anal…
Evidence of forestry management and arboriculture practices in waterlogged wood remains from three wells at the Roman and late antiquity sites of Iesso and Vilauba (Catalonia, Spain)
The aim of this paper is to provide new data on forest management and arboricultural practices in the Roman and Late Antique periods in the north-eastern Iberian Peninsula. In this study, the waterlogged branches found in three wells at the sites of Iesso and Vilauba in the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula were analysed. To determine management practices the roundwood method, based on the correlation between age and diameter, has been applied. …
Sorting the Trees: The Role of Laurus nobilis in the Woodland Management Practices at La Draga (Banyoles, Spain)
It is suggested that woodland management (e.g. pollarding, pruning, or coppicing) was practiced from at least the Neolithic onwards. The goal of this work is to discuss woodland management practices in the Early Neolithic waterlogged site of La Draga (5300–4700 cal BC , Banyoles, Spain). To date, different methods and techniques (dendrochronology, roundwood age and diameter, dendrology, etc.) have been applied to address this issue, and some prel…
Multi-site archaeobotanical analysis reveals wood-fuel supply, woodland impact and land use around Roman urban centres: The case of Barcino (Barcelona, NE Iberia)
Livestock management at the Late Iron Age site of Baltarga (eastern Pyrenees): An Integrated Bio-Geoarchaeological Approach
Despite the important role of livestock farming amongst Iron Age communities living in mountain regions, there is little information about livestock management, and particularly stabling practises, breeding systems, and grazing/foddering patterns. The study of the ground floor of Building G in Tossal de Baltarga has provided valuable insights into these important issues and has given us a better understanding of the social and economic patterns i…
Nuevo hallazgo de arte mueble de estilo Paleolítico en el Noreste peninsular: La plaqueta grabada de les Coves del Fem (Ulldemolins, Tarragona)
This paper reports the discovery of a schist slab with 7 zoomorphic figures (deer, wild goats and/or bulls) and other engraved remains at Coves del Fem site (Ulldemolins, Priorat, Tarragona) in 2020. This find adds to the limited, although unique, repertoire of portable art of Palaeolithic style found so far in the northeastern part of the Iberian Peninsula. A detailed analysis of this piece and comparison with the artistic record known so far fo…

Experimental programs focused on various techno-functional issues have been carried out for more than a decade around the research project of the La Draga lacustrine Neolithic site (Banyoles-Girona).The extraordinary conservation of archaeological materials made from both inorganic and organic materials has allowed the development of programs that have replicated technical processes of production and use of different tools and artifacts of bone, …
Models of Neolithisation of Northeastern Iberian Peninsula: New Evidence of Human Occupations During the Sixth Millennium cal BC
The goal of this article is to discuss the significance of the archaeological evidence from the sites of La Draga (Banyoles, Spain) and Coves del Fem (Ulldemolins, Spain), in the context of the neolithisation of Northeastern Iberia. The 14 C dates have been analysed using Bayesian statistics. The stratigraphy of Coves del Fem covers the transition between the last hunter–gatherers of the region and the first farmers. The chronological sequence co…

Digging sticks and agriculture development at the ancient Neolithic site of la Draga (Banyoles, Spain)
Wooden Technology During the Iron Age: The Aspio Cave (Ruesga, North Spain)
Remains of perishable materials only survive at archaeological sites in extraordinary preservation conditions. This means that some technologies, such as woodworking, are clearly under‐represented in the archaeological record. Twelve wooden objects were found in the Aspio Cave (Ruesga, Cantabria). The application of an appropriate analytical methodology has allowed us to identify the processes of their selection, acquisition, fabrication and main…
Wood analysis and beyond: Contribution of twice-neglected wooden materials to the wooden procurement and transformation processes at la Draga (Banyoles, Spain)
Wood Procurement at the Early Neolithic site of La Draga (Banyoles, Barcelona)
Wood is one of the most common raw materials for the prehistoric societies. Therefore sites were wood is preserved in waterlogged conditions are essential in order to understand those prehistoric societies. La Draga (Banyoles, Spain) is a lake dwelling dated 5300–4900 cal BC, which correspond to the firsts farming societies on the Iberian Peninsula. The site has provided an excellent sample of tools and architectonical remains made of wood. This …
The Distribution and Use of Box ( Buxus sempervirens L . ) in the Northeastern Iberian Peninsula During the Holocene
The aim of this paper is to evaluate the distribution of box (Buxus sempervirens L.) in the Holocene vegetation of NE Spain and its use during prehistory. The scarcity of box in pollen records contrasts with the frequent presence of box charcoal at archaeological sites in the north-eastern Iberian Peninsula. Box charcoal has been documented in 41 Holocene sites, indicating its systematic use as firewood. To date, wooden artefacts have only been d…
