  • Time and distance heterogeneity in the neighborhood spillover effects of foreclosed properties

Lei Zhang, Tammy Leonard et al.•ARTICLE•Housing Studies•2016•Cited by: 6•References: 17

In this paper, we examined heterogeneity in the simultaneous space-time impact of foreclosures on neighborhood property values. Foreclosures with longer foreclosure processes were associated with negative neighborhood price externalities from the time the foreclosing household still had ownership of the property and continued through the Real Estate Owned period. However, foreclosures with shorter foreclosure processes were associated with negati…

  • Subjective Well-Being in Context

Open Access•Maike Luhmann, James C Murdoch et al.•ARTICLE•Social Psychological and…•2015

Subjective well-being (SWB) is not only influenced by people’s individual characteristics but also by characteristics of the places where they live. Using data from the Health and Retirement Survey ( N = 5,975), we examined whether two indicators of the socioeconomic context (unemployment and poverty rates) are associated with SWB in older adults. The main findings were (a) these contextual variables are differentially related to SWB on the count…

  • An analysis of the neighborhood impacts of a mortgage assistance program

Open Access•Wenhua Di, Jielai Ma et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Policy Analysis and…•2010•Cited by: 9•References: 1

Down payment or closing cost assistance is an effective program in addressing the wealth constraints of low-and moderate-income homebuyers. However, the spillover effect of such programs on the neighborhood is unknown. This paper estimates the impact of the City of Dallas Mortgage Assistance Program (MAP) on nearby home values using a hedonic model of home sales from 1990 to 2006. We define neighborhoods of 1,000 feet around each sale and estimat…

  • Civil Wars and Economic Growth

    Open Access•James C Murdoch, James Murdoch et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Political…•2004•Cited by: 79•References: 19

This article quantifies the impact of civil wars on economic growth at home and in nearby countries. Three alternative measures of nearness—contiguity, length of contiguous borders, and distance of closest approach—are used to capture the spatial dispersion of civil war consequences. We present short‐run panel estimates (at five‐year intervals) and long‐run (1961–95) panel estimates for the world. Generally, the distance measures, novel to this s…

  • Why Cooperate? Public Goods, Economic Power, and the Montreal Protocol

Kurt J Beron, James C Murdoch et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2003

This paper develops a correlated probit model to describe dichotomous choices that may contain a public-goods component or some other forms of interdependency. The key contribution of the paper is to formulate tests for interdependent behavior among agents. In particular, we examine the decisions by nations whether or not to ratify the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. Specifically, we reject free riding as a motive fo…

  • Economic Growth, Civil Wars, and Spatial Spillovers

    Open Access•James C Murdoch, James Murdoch et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Conflict Resolution•2002•Cited by: 119•References: 17

A neoclassical growth model is used to empirically test for the influences of a civil war on steady-state income per capita both at home and in neighboring countries. This model provides the basis for measuring long-run and short-run effects of civil wars on income per capita growth in the host country and its neighbors. Evidence of significant collateral damage on economic growth in neighboring nations is uncovered. In addition, this damage is a…

  • A Tale of Two Collectives

Open Access•James C Murdoch, James Murdoch et al.•ARTICLE•Economica•1997•Cited by: 18

A theoretical model of emission reductions is specified that accounts for voluntary and non‐voluntary behaviour regarding the adherence to the Helsinki and Sofia Protocols, which mandated emission reductions for sulphur (S) and nitrogen oxides (NO x ), respectively. From this model, we derive an econometric specification for the demand for emission reductions that adjusts for the spatial dispersion of the pollutant. When tested for 25 European na…

  • An Econometric Technique for Comparing Median Voter and Oligarchy Choice Models of Collective Action

James C Murdoch, James Murdoch et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•1991

This paper devises an empirical methodology for discriminating between the median voter model and the oligarchy choice model when applied to the collective provision of a public good. In particular, an empirical methodology is engineered so that a nested test procedure can evaluate competing models. The authors apply this methodology to examine the demand for military activities of ten members of the NATO alliance. A two-stage least squares proce…

  • A Theoretical and Empirical Analysis of Nato

    Open Access•James C Murdoch, James Murdoch et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Conflict Resolution•1982•Cited by: 52•References: 9

This article improves and refines the joint product model so that it can better analyze nuclear war alliances. In particular, the refined models demonstrate that allies' responses to defense spillovers depend upon the consumption relationship (i.e., complementarity or substitutability) of the jointly produced defense outputs as well as the allies' income responsiveness. The stability and size of alliances are also related to the consumption relat…
