  • Reshaping the Past

    Open Access•Barry P Scherr•ARTICLE•The Russian Review•2014

Although not as well‐known as his memoirs of Tolstoy, Chekhov, and Andreev, Gorky's two essays devoted to Korolenko are of no less interest. First, like some of Gorky's other works that draw on his life experiences, they show clear evidence of artistic reworking: he is not beyond playing with the chronology and introducing certain elements to reshape his memories into effective narratives. The existence of a third item on Korolenko, a speech that…

  • An Odessa Odyssey

    Open Access•Barry P Scherr•ARTICLE•Slavic Review•2011•References: 2

Vladimir (later known as Ze'ev) Jabotinsky is remembered today largely for his Zionism, but in his younger years he had gained recognition for his literary career, which he never entirely abandoned. His final novel,The Five(1936), written in Russian long after he had left his native country, depicts Jewish life in his native Odessa at the beginning of the twentieth century. The novel contains two main narrative lines. One involves a paean to the …

  • Leonid Martynov, Boris Slutsky and the Politics of Rhythm

    Open Access•Barry P Scherr•ARTICLE•Paragraph•2010

Leonid Martynov (1905-80) and Boris Slutsky (1919-86) began to write during Stalin's reign and were aware of the contemporary official pressure to make literature more broadly accessible as well as of the highly experimental, and thus more difficult, poetry that had come into vogue during the years leading up to the Bolshevik revolution. Martynov's response was to create verse marked by ambiguity; he employs the graphic layout and internal rhyme …

Barry P Scherr, Yuri Tsivian et al.•ARTICLE•The Slavic and East European…•2006

Lines of Resistance is a major collection of little-known writings by and about Dziga Vertov, available here in English for the first time. While Vertov's uncompromising writings and his experimental features, such as Man with a Movie Camera, are known and discussed in the West, less is known about the other films he made in the 1920s, and still less about the response they provoked in the Soviet Union and abroad. Vertov liked to call his films a…

  • If You See the Buddha

Barry P Scherr, Thomas Gaiton Marullo•ARTICLE•The Slavic and East European…•1999

This is an addition to the growing body of critical work on Bunin. In this study Thomas Gaiton Marullo seeks to break the deadlock that has impeded criticism on Bunin for almost a century: first, by establishing him as a modern writer whose images were thoroughly rooted in the twentieth century; and second, by positing Bunin's abiding interest in Buddhism as a major influence on his writing

The Bolshevik Revolution had little immediate effect on the periodicals, news-papers, and publishing houses that were already in existence in 1917. During the first few months after the takeover, Communist Party papers appeared along with satirical journals, such as The Scourge (Bich) and The New Satyricon (Novyi satirikon) , that remained steadfastly opposed to the new regime. Then, in the middle of 1918, the government ordered the closing of al…

Barry P Scherr, Edward J Brown•ARTICLE•The Slavic and East European…•1983

Long recognized as the best and most comprehensive work on its subject, Edward J. Brown's fine book is now thoroughly revised and updated. It provides a compendious treatment of Russian literature from the revolutionary period to the early 1980s. Every stage in the evolution of Russian literature since 1917, every major author, all the important literary organizations, groups, and movements, are sharply outlined, with a wealth of often unfamiliar…
