    Jesús A Ramos-Kittrell•BOOK•Decentering the Nation•2019

winner of the 2021 Ellen Koskoff Edited Volume Prize Decentering the Nation: Music, Mexicanidad, and Globalization considers how neoliberal capitalism has upset the symbolic economy of “Mexican” cultural discourse, and how this phenomenon touches on a broader crisis of representation affecting the nation-state in globalization. • Playing in the Cathedral: Music, Race, and Status in New Spain

    Jesús A Ramos-Kittrell•BOOK•Playing in the cathedral•2016•Cited by: 2

This book explores how cathedral musicians in eighteenth-century Mexico City relied on music and on their institutional affiliation to define their social place. In this regard, scholars observe that the overwhelming proliferation of lay endowments was indicative of a fascination with excess and ostentation in ritual, which the crown aimed to curb. However, such studies stress that reform policies did not …

  • La música y el Atlántico: Relaciones musicales entre España y Latinoamérica

    Jesús A Ramos-Kittrell•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2009

In a demonstration of what Hispanic studies can contribute to the enrichment of musicology, María Gembero Ustárroz and Emilio Ros-Fábregas have compiled a collection of essays that challenge notions of center-periphery and Europe as the sole source of influence in Western musical discourse. This collection explores the ways in which European thinking was actually molded, renewed, and transformed, thus creating and localizing new hegemonies that, …
