The international diffusion of medical innovation since 1900
Maurits Bastiaan Meerwijk, A history of plague in Java, 1911-1942
Epidemics and urban growth
The literature has long studied the economic consequences of epidemics. While plague and influenza episodes have received substantial attention by researchers, the same does not apply to cholera outbreaks. We examine the impact of cholera in urban Prussia during the 19th century with two novel datasets containing detailed information on cholera mortality and population growth for almost one thousand cities. Our results show that cities experienci…
Water, Politics, and Disease
This article examines the causes and consequences of the diffusion of modern water supplies in Germany during the period from 1850 to 1913. It offers a comprehensive view of sanitary investments with a newly digitized dataset on water supply infrastructure construction dates for almost three hundred urban settlements. The diffusion of these investments was rather slow until the 1870s and then accelerated in subsequent decades, mostly because of f…
A bitter epidemic
Research about the economic consequences of past epidemics has mostly focused on the experience of industrialized countries, thus providing little knowledge about the effects of health shocks on developing economies. We fill this gap by studying the impact of the 1918 influenza in Java, with a new dataset on aggregate food production and district-level figures on (i) sugar production, the major export commodity and the predominant source of labou…
Landscapes of Disease
Sanitary infrastructures and the decline of mortality in Germany, 1877-1913
Clean water provision is considered crucial for eradicating waterborne diseases. However, the benefits of piped water can be limited in environments characterized by the inadequate storage and disposal of waste. This article studies the impact of waterworks and sewerage on mortality in German cities during the period 1877-1913. The results show that the supply of safe drinking water reduced the number of deaths, although to a lower extent than su…
Missed opportunities? Human welfare in Western Europe and the United States, 1913–1950
Health and economic development since 1900
Paving the way to modernity
This study investigates the relation of pre-railroad transport infrastructure on Westphalian grain market integration in the early nineteenth century. It is motivated by recently found indications of macroeconomic change in Prussia such as increased demand for labour, disappearance of positive Malthusian shocks and grain market integration. These coincide and correspond well with a number of institutional breaks such as border changes and state c…
