  • Gödel's First Proof of the Consistency of the Axiom of Choice

Open Access•Akihiro Kanamori, Jan Von Plato•ARTICLE•History and Philosophy of Logic•2025

Gödel's first steps in set theory, from the summer of 1935 to the end of his stay in Princeton half a year later, are described in the light of his shorthand notebooks. The notes end with an English manuscript titled ‘The freedom from contradiction of the axiom of choice’ that is analyzed in detail. Gödel works out a logical hierarchical construction that systematically incorporates well-orderings, thereby affirming the title of his paper. He als…

  • Years of Gödel’s Incompleteness Theorems: Historical and Philosophical Perspectives

Open Access•Matthias Baaz, Marcel Ertel et al.•ARTICLE•History and Philosophy of Logic•2025

In celebration of the 90th anniversary of the publication of Kurt Gödel’s incompleteness theorems, this special issue brings together articles exploring Gödelian themes from historical and philosophical points of view. It is one of two special issues comprising articles by invited speakers of the conference ‘Celebrating 90 Years of Gödel’s Incompleteness Theorems’, held in Nürtingen (Germany) in July 2021

  • Elements of Logical Reasoning

    Open Access•Jan Von Plato•BOOK•Elements of Logical Reasoning•2014

Some of our earliest experiences of the conclusive force of an argument come from school mathematics: faced with a mathematical proof, we cannot deny the conclusion once the premises have been accepted. Behind such arguments lies a more general pattern of 'demonstrative arguments' that is studied in the science of logic. Logical reasoning is applied at all levels, from everyday life to advanced sciences, and a remarkable level of complexity is ac…

  • Probability and Determinism

    Open Access•Jan Von Plato•ARTICLE•Philosophy of Science•1982•Cited by: 3•References: 10

This paper discusses different interpretations of probability in relation to determinism. It is argued that both objective and subjective views on probability can be compatible with deterministic as well as indeterministic situations. The possibility of a conceptual independence between probability and determinism is argued to hold on a general level. The subsequent philosophical analysis of recent advances in classical statistical mechanics (erg…
