Symmetry and asymmetry in humans
Symmetry is mostly used to describe body shapes. In humans, symmetry can be investigated at microscopic and macroscopic level. At molecular level life is asymmetric. Most compounds are chiral, such as carbohydrates, amino acids, and nucleic acids. Since only one enantiomer of a chiral molecule predominates, this concept is referred to as homochirality. Amino acids appear almost exclusively in the left-handed form, whereas sugars appear in the rig…
The Study of the Skeletal Remains of the 16th Century Italian Commander Alessandro Farnese and His Wife, Maria D'Aviz
Entheseal changes are indicators of persistent and long‐term changes induced by occupational activity and refer to marks on the skeleton where a muscle, tendon, or ligament inserts into the periosteum. Their study makes it possible to deduce further information about the person to whom the human bone remains belong. The authors present here the analysis of these markers on the bone remains of two Italian historical figures who lived in the 16th c…

Flaminio Rota: Fame and Glory of a 16th Century Anatomist without Scientific Publications
Academic activity is intrinsically composed of two aspects: teaching and research. Since the 20th century, the aphorism "publish or perish" has overwhelmingly established itself in the academic field. Research activity has absorbed more attention from the professors who have neglected teaching activity. In anatomical sciences, research has focused mainly on ultrastructural anatomy and biochemical aspects, far removed from the topics addressed to …
Oral status of a noble European couple from the 16th century: A morphologic analysis of the teeth of Alessandro Farnese and his wife Maria D’Aviz
Objective. To report the results of dental morphological analysis performed on the remains of two European nobles (Duke Alessandro Farnese and his wife Maria D'Aviz) who lived in the 16 th century, together with hypotheses on their nutrition and oral hygiene habits. Design and results. The remains of Alessandro Farnese (1545-1592) and Princess Maria D'Aviz (1538-1577) were exhumed in Parma, Italy, in the context of an historical investigation int…
The Presumed Skull of Athalaric, King of the Ostrogoths (Ad 516–534): Questioning of a Century-Old Attribution and Paleopathological Study
The "Luigi Cattaneo" Museum of Anatomical Waxes of the University of Bologna houses a skull (Figure 1a, 3D virtual reconstruction Figure 1d) labelled as Skull of Athalaric, King of the Ostrogoths (Cranio di Atalarico, Re degli Ostrogoti), which represents the object of the present analysis, aimed at assessing the genuineness of the attribution as well as the health status of this individual. To achieve this goal, a multidisciplinary approach incl…
