New dentognathic fossils of Noropithecus bulukensis (Primates, Victoriapithecidae) from the late Early Miocene of Buluk, Kenya

Primate Dentition: An Introduction to the Teeth of Non-Human Primates
Ancestral loss of the maxillary sinus in Old World monkeys and independent acquisition in Macaca
Cercopithecoid monkeys are unique among primates in that all species (except macaques) lack a maxillary sinus, an unusual condition among eutherian mammals. Although this uncommon distribution of cranial pneumatization was noted previously, the phylogenetic ramifications have not been investigated fully. Recently, character state optimization analysis of computed tomography (CT) data from extant Old World monkeys suggested that the loss of the si…

Victoriapithecus: The key to Old World monkey and catarrhine origins
The past ten years have witnessed major changes in reconstructions of the history of Old World monkeys, most of them driven by new material of the Miocene monkey Victoriapithecus from Maboko Island, Kenya. Before the mid-1980s, predictions about the morphological and ecological adaptations of the earliest cercopithecoids relied heavily on evidence from extant colobine and cercopithecine monkeys. It was argued that the earliest cercopithecoids wer…
Miocene Hominoids and Hominid Origins
Recent discoveries have greatly clarified the family tree relationships of Miocene apes to modern apes and humans. Contrary to most previous interpretations, new fossil evidence indicates that well-known middle-late Miocene large-bodied apes such as Kenyapithecus, Sivapithecus, and Dryopithecus branched off before the ancestor that gave rise to all living hominoids; therefore, these extinct genera are not members of the great ape and human groupi…
Theropithecus. The rise and fall of a primate genus
Phylogenetic, paleodemographic, and taphonomic implications of Victoriapithecus deciduous teeth from Maboko, Kenva
More than 240 milk teeth of Victoriapithecus macinnesi , representing all elements of the deciduous dentition, are described. Their morphology is intermediate between that of hominoids and cercopithecids. Unlike colobine and cercopithecine milk teeth, Victoriapithecus dp 3 s, dp 4 s, and at least 7 (14%) dp 4 s lack transverse distal loph(id)s and are not bilophodont. Victoriapithecus also differs from cercopithecids in having less elongated deci…
Facial anatomy of Victoriapithecus and its relevance to the ancestral cranial morphology of old world monkeys and apes
Recently discovered Craniofacial fossils of the middle Miocene cercopithecoid Victoriapithecus are described. The frontal, zygomatic, maxilla, and premaxilla anatomy differ from the previously proposed colobine‐like ancestral cercopithecoid morphotype in several significant respects. This morphotype was based on the assumption that features held in common by subordinate hominoid and cercopithecoid morphotypes (Colobinae and Hylobatidae) are primi…
Comparative assessment of the ischial morphology of Victoriapithecus macinnesi
An almost complete primate ischium was recovered from middle Miocene (ca. 15 ma) deposits of Maboko Island (Kenya) in 1987. The specimen shows numerous similarities to the ischial morphology of extant cercopithecids and is attributed to Victoriapithecus macinnesi (Von Koenigswald, 1969), the early Old World monkey best known from Maboko Island. The Victoriapithecus ischium provides the first evidence of early Old World monkey pelvic girdle anatom…

Miocene fossil cercopithecoids from Kenya
Fossil cercopithecoid material from Ngeringerowa, Ngorora, and Nakali, dated at between 8.5 and 10.5 m.y., is described. The specimens are the only cercopithecoid remains dated between 15 and 6 m.y. from sub‐Saharan Africa. The mandible of asmall colobine from Ngeringerowa (similar in size to Colobus verus ) is assigned to a new genus and species, Microcolobus tugenensis . Unlike other colobine genera, the symphysis of Microcolobus lacks an infer…
Excavations at Hascherkeller in Bavaria: Field Research into the Economy of a Late Bronze/Early Iron Age Village
The third season of excavation at Hascherkeller completed the investigation of a large area of the central portion of the settlement. In addition to filling out a substantial part of the settlement plan, the 1980 excavations produced important new stratigraphic evidence bearing upon structural changes in the settlement over time. The 1980 season also allowed the completion of data collection for several types of technical analysis, the results of…
