Emerging outsource agricultural services enable farmer adaptation in agrifood value chains: A product cycle perspective
Outsource agricultural service enterprises emerged a century ago in high-income countries and in the past several decades in developing regions. • These services help farmers adapt to international and domestic agrifood value chains in the commoditization and product differentiation phases of the Product Cycle. • We provide grain and horticulture cases in Africa, Asia, Europe. Latin America, and the US. • These services addressed farmers’ shortfa…
Impact of global value chains on tariffs and non-tariff measures in agriculture and food
We analyse whether global value chains (GVCs) reduce trade barriers in the agricultural and food sectors as they affect lobbying and government incentives. Political economy theory predicts that tariffs will be lower in countries integrated in GVCs and that the effect will be stronger outside regional trade agreements (RTAs). We use data from 1995 to 2015 from 160 countries on tariffs and non-tariff measures (NTMs) in the agri-food sector. Our ev…
Agri-food Value Chain Revolutions in Low- and Middle-Income Countries
Agri-food value chains (AVCs) intermediate the flow of products between largely rural farmers, fisherfolk, or herders and increasingly urban consumers. The theoretical models that historically structured research on the economic development process assumed away AVC functions, however, and AVC firms and workers were necessarily omitted from the household data that generated most empirical findings in the agricultural and development economics lite…

The Political Economy of Agricultural and Food Policies
Food and agriculture have been subject to heavy-handed government interventions throughout much of history and across the globe, both in developing and developed countries. Political considerations are crucial to understand these policies since almost all agricultural and food policies have redistributive effects and are therefore subject to lobbying and pressure from interest groups and used by decision-makers to influence society for both econo…

Big cities, small towns, and poor farmers: Evidence from Ethiopia
Urbanization is happening fast in the developing world and especially so in sub-Saharan Africa where growth rates of cities are among the highest in the world. While cities and, in particular, secondary towns, where most of the urban population in sub-Saharan Africa resides, affect agricultural practices in their rural hinterlands, this relationship is not well understood. To fill this gap, we develop a conceptual model to analyze how farmers’ pr…

Smallholder agriculture in transition economies
In this paper, we analyse how smallholder farms have evolved during the transition process in former communist countries and how this process has differed across countries and commodities. The role of smallholders in agriculture differs among transition countries, and this diversity is due to a combination of factors, including capital, labour and land endowments, income levels, scale economies, market imperfections, and reform choices. Instituti…

Chocolate Regulations
Chocolate and cocoa have been subject to regulations and standards as long as cocoa has been cultivated and used. This chapter reviews the regulations that have been imposed on the cocoa–chocolate chain since the growth of cocoa trade and global chocolate consumption (i.e., the seventeenth century and later). Regulations were introduced to tax cocoa trade and chocolate production, both in Europe in the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries and in pos…
The economics of chocolate
This book, written by global experts, provides a comprehensive and topical analysis on the economics of chocolate. While the main approach is economic analysis, there are important contributions from other disciplines, including psychology, history, government, nutrition, and geography. The chapters are organized around several themes, including the history of cocoa and chocolate - from cocoa drinks in the Maya empire to the growing sales of Belg…
The Diversity of Land Markets and Regulations in Europe, and (some of) its Causes
The creation of optimal land institutions attracted renewed attention in the 1990s because of its central role in the transition process in former Communist countries in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, and more recently because of large-scale land investments in developing countries. This article documents the existence of large variations in land institutions (markets and regulation) using current and historical data from Western and…

How beer created Belgium (and the Netherlands): The contribution of beer taxes to war finance during the Dutch Revolt
The present-day border between Belgium and the Netherlands can be traced back to the separation of the Low Countries after the Dutch Revolt (1566–1648) against Spanish rule. The capacity to finance the escalating cost of war determined the outcome of this conflict. As Spain struggled to provide regular pay to its troops, its war efforts were often plagued by mutiny. In contrast, the Dutch Republic managed to raise large sums for its war budgets. …

Success and Failure of Reform: Insights from the Transition of Agriculture
The paper analyzes the linkages between the reform strategies in transition countries and economic performance. We focus on agriculture because of the sharpness of the policy changes, fundamental differences among countries, and relative simplicity of agricultural relationships. We document post reform performance in the transition countries of Asia and Europe. We show how: a.) pricing reform and subsidy reductions; b.) land rights reform and pol…

Globalization, privatization, and vertical coordination in food value chains in developing and transition countries
Food and agricultural commodity value chains in developing and transition countries have undergone tremendous changes in the past decades. Companies and property rights have been privatized, markets liberalized, and economies integrated into global food systems. The liberalization and privatization initially caused the collapse of state‐controlled vertical coordination. More recently, private vertical coordination systems have emerged and are gro…

Horticulture Wholesale Trade and Governance in India: Evidence from Uttarakhand
In a detailed case study of traditional wholesale markets for vegetables in India (in the state of Uttarakhand), we find several important governance problems at horticulture wholesale markets: marketing regulations are ineffective, widespread confusion of roles exists between brokers and wholesalers and few services are being delivered in return for the money paid to brokers and wholesale market authorities. Licensing schemes and political muscl…
