“Crises” in Scholarly Communications? Insights from the Emergence of the Journal of Library History , 1947–1966
This study examines the first ten years of the journal now known as Information & Culture. Founded in 1966 as the Journal of Library History, the Journal has been shaped according to the values, habits, and competencies that its contributors brought to changing circumstances so as to transform the Journal into an erudite interdisciplinary publication distant from its beginnings as a compendium of entertaining vignettes and didactic notes on the w…

Alvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca: His Account, His Life, and the Expedition of Pánfilo de Narváez
This work by Rolena Adorno and Patrick Pautz is not just a new edition of the 1542 first-published account of the Narváez expedition by Alvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca; it is a historiographical tour de force, a model for the kind of detailed textual criticism that is made possible by the investigation of the intertextual connections and reception of the text itself. This reader’s first reaction was to think that it is too bad that the impetus of the …

Hernando de Soto and the Indians of Florida
Hernando de Soto and the Indians of Florida
Hernando de Soto, the Spanish conquistador, is legendary in the United States today: counties, cars, caverns, shopping malls and bridges all bear his name. This work explains the historical importance of his expedition, a journey that began at Tampa Bay in 1539 and ended in Arkansas in 1543. De Soto's explorations, the first European penetration of eastern North America, preceded a demographic disaster for the aboriginal peoples in the region. Ol…

So Many Little Republics: British Negotiations with the Choctaw Confederacy, 1765
The Choctaw Indians known to European colonizers of the eighteenth century were a multiethnic confederacy that had emerged in the protohistoric period. This essay reviews that process and uses the 1765 British treaty and land grant negotiations with the Choctaw to show how the Choctaw continued to insist on the divisional autonomy that reflected their ethnic diversity, even after a hundred years of contact. In March 1765, the Choctaw met with Bri…
