  • Ringed, Bearded, and Ribbon Seal Vocalizations North of Barrow, Alaska: Seasonal Presence and Relationship with Sea Ice

    Open Access•Jennifer M Jones, Bruce J Thayre et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2014

The acoustic repertoires of ringed, bearded, and ribbon seals are described, along with their seasonal occurrence and relationship to sea ice concentration. Acoustic recordings were made between September and June over three years (2006 – 09) along the continental slope break in the Chukchi Sea, 120 km north-northwest of Barrow, Alaska. Vocalizations of ringed and bearded seals occurred in winter and during periods of 80% – 100% ice cover but wer…

  • The Vertical Profile of Wind at Lake Hazen, N.W.T

    Open Access•C I Jackson•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•1965

Reports a series of observations of tropospheric wind speeds measured by pilot balloon at Lake Hazen, north interior Ellesmere Island, 16 May-18 Aug, 1961. These data are compared with simultaneous observations at the coastal stations Alert and Eureka. Anomalously low mean wind speeds up to 7000 ft are analyzed. Two interacting contributory factors are identified: the influence of local relief and marked year-round thermal stability. This persist…

    Open Access•C I Jackson•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•1961

During the International Geophysical Year observations of the surface weather were made at Lake Hazen, Ellesmere Island, N.W.T., Canada; they indicate that considerable differences exist between conditions at this inland site and the nearest coastal weather stations Alert and Eureka. In particular, there is an unusual prevalence of calms and an almost complete absence of winds over 20 m.p.h. To investigate this phenomenon in more detail a series …
