Seismic Instrumentation for Nuclear Power Plants
Seismic instrumentation used to measure earthquake response in a nuclear power plant is considered. Recommendations concerning the instruments to be used and their locations in the plant are presented. It is suggested that a central recording unit be placed in the control area. This unit is connected to three triaxial accelerographs which measure acceleration time history at the basement of the reactor building, high in the reactor building, and …
Design of Steel Chimney Liners
Several structural problems which arise in the design of bottom-supported, steel chimney liners are reviewed. The loads which a liner must sustain include dead weight, bending due to wind, seismic, thermal gradients and stack draft. Thermal gradients can cause stresses which are quite high. However, the magnitude of these stresses depend not only on the temperature differences, but on the spatial distribution of the variation. Liners are thin cyl…
Seismic Analysis of Nuclear Power Plant Structures
Nuclear power stations, due to the consideration of insuring public safety, must be designed to withstand the effects of postulated strong motion earthquakes. A few of the many aspects of a complete seismic analysis are discussed. The loadings on the structures are determined by a dynamic analysis. The mathematical bases for the two most common methods of analysis, the response spectrum method and the time-history method, are presented. A descrip…
