A Radiocarbon Database for Scottish Archaeological Samples
For the majority of dating laboratories and their respective user communities, the journal Radiocarbon is no longer regarded as the medium for primary publication of radiocarbon measurements. In compliance with editorial policy, the emphasis has long since moved towards the publication of research papers on technological enhancements and applications of 14 C as well as other cosmogenic isotopes and this has left a requirement for an alternative m…
Radiocarbon dating
Chronology and its refinement continues to be important, especially in the methods by which the dates are actually achieved. Here, the question of whether single object/bone samples provide more accurate dates than mixed samples is debated, and applied to samples from prehistoric Scotland. In an appendix, the recent radiocarbon dating of samples from within the Calanais stone circle on the Isle of Lewis, Scotland, opens up further debate on phasin…
The excavation of a square-ditched barrow and other cropmarks at Boysack Mills, Inverkeilor, Angus
This report describes the excavation in 1977 of a square-ditched barrow probably dating from the first or second century AD, together with the damaged remains of a second square-ditched barrow, a crescentic feature (possibly the very damaged remains of a ring-ditch or ring-ditch house), and a circular enclosure, possibly of Neo date and measuring 18cm in diameter. A burial accompanied by a Beaker was recovered from the quarry shortly after the ma…
The excavation of two later Iron Age fortified homesteads at Aldclune, Blair Atholl, Perth & Kinross
Two small `forts', probably large round houses, occupying a natural eminence and further defended by banks and ditches, were excavated in advance of road building. Construction began at Site 2 between the first and second centuries BC and at Site 1 between the second and third centuries AD. Two major phases of occupation were found at each site. There are notes on: `Natural topography and landuse' by I D Máté (411--12); `Charcoal identification' …
A cist at Ruchlaw Mains, East Lothian
A cist was discovered during ploughing on 10 December 1979.It was a simple floored and capped stone box; it contained an adult male skeleton with a Developed to Late Northern beaker placed to the left of the skull.A radiocarbon date suggests it belongs in the last half of the third millenium BC
