  • Queer by numbers, or what is happening to popular discourses of LGBTQ+ media representation

    R Payne•ARTICLE•Queer Studies in Media & Popular…•2024

This article examines recent popular discourse around LGBTQ+ media representation and argues that the discourse’s attitudes and assumptions reflect both an expanded understanding of gender and sexual diversity and a narrowed understanding of how media representation functions. First, a sample of recent popular journalism from three online publications targeted at LGBTQ+ readers ( Attitude, Out and Têtu ) is analysed. Findings show how the publica…

In an era of “frictionless” digital environments, this article proposes a queer analysis of the “lossy” materialities of mediated encounters. Building on recent scholarship on media failure and media infrastructures, it will argue that moments of disruption and deterioration commonly experienced by users reveal the failure of overlapping social and technical infrastructures to ensure lossless transmission of normative fantasies of subjectivity an…

  • Je suis Charlie’

This article examines the online circulation of the slogan ‘ Je suis Charlie’ which went viral on social media after the Charlie Hebdo attacks in Paris in January 2015. Building first on recent literature on digital virality, it approaches the slogan’s circulation in terms of the transfer of affective intensities among network connections and with consideration to the function of social media algorithms in bringing about network encounters. Two s…

This article analyses the recent Facebook innovation of "frictionless sharing", a term which describes a smoother and wider distribution of content by individual users and a less overtly acknowledged but more efficient instrumentalization of users' immaterial labour within a structure of corporate monetization. It builds on my recent work on "the sharing subject" of contemporary digital media, in which I argue that current online social networkin…

  • Virality 2.0

    R Payne•ARTICLE•Cultural Studies•2013

Media virality is a current fetish object in a number of overlapping contexts including marketing, IT design and academia. The desirability of media ‘going viral’ is confirmed by efforts now undertaken to categorize viral success through a range of typologies and metrics, conceived in order to predict and achieve virality. A recent online ad campaign, staged as a ‘how to make a viral video’, signals the complexity of the concept of manufactured v…

This article interrogates the mutual dynamics of grounding and floating evident in the mediated performance of Australian masculinity embodied by two male television personalities, Tom Williams and Jake Wall. I argue that both men's flirtation with feminizing spectacle – centred on acts of bodily, affective and media exposure – did not jeopardize but reinforced their association with heteronormative masculinity. The widespread popularity of both …

    R Payne•ARTICLE•Social Semiotics•2007•Cited by: 11•References: 6

This essay analyses performances of masculinity in the profiles constructed by users of the gay men's dating website Gaydar, as well as normative ideological framings of identity built in to key features of the site. In particular, focus is placed on the self-categorisation “straight-acting”, which participates in reductive typologies of gay masculinity. The apparent heteronormativity of “straight-acting” is complicated by the term's ambiguous re…

  • Virtually

    Open Access•R Payne•ARTICLE•Postmodern Culture•2004

Virtually: The Refreshment of Interface Value Robert Payne (bio) Abstract This essay examines virtual representation as a source of anxiety—moral, cultural, and epistemological. By first analyzing two failed attempts by the U.S. Congress to apply legislative closure to the admitted epistemological uncertainty of virtual child pornography, the question of performativity is raised. The Congressional Acts’ contradictory logic imagined a contagion of…

  • Leadership and Perceptions of Change in a Village Confronted with Urbanism
