    Hans-Georg Ziebertz, Hans‐georg Ziebertz et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Empirical Theology•2020

Differences in race, ethnic origin, gender, belief and worldview, disability and chronic disease, age, and sexual orientation must not be a reason for discriminating against people. Non-discrimination is enshrined as a fundamental right in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, in numerous subsequent documents and in the constitutions of democratic states. Also the major religions are hostile to discriminatory distinctions. Among the groups t…

  • The Impact of Religion and National Origin on Attitudes towards Refugee Rights: An International Comparative Empirical Study

    Open Access•Alexander Unser, Hans-Georg Ziebertz et al.•ARTICLE•Religions•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 19

This paper is concerned with the rights of refugees. The refugee issue has been an acutely charged item on the political agenda for several years. Although the great waves of influx have flattened out, people are continually venturing into Europe. Europe's handling of refugees has been subject to strong criticism, and the accusation that various actions contradict internationally agreed law is particularly serious. It remains a question of how to…

  • Religious Commitment and Empathic Concern

    Hans-Georg Ziebertz, Hans‐georg Ziebertz•ARTICLE•Journal of Empirical Theology•2018

There is very extensive literature on whether and how religiosity and empathy are related. Such research shows very different results, with some finding a positive influence while others seeing no influence. This paper presents research conducted on German youth (N=2157) regarding the question of how young people score on empathic concern and which concepts function as predictors. Therefore, different concepts on religious commitment are included…

  • The Impact of Religious and National Belonging on Attitudes Concerning the Social Importance of Religion

    Hans-Georg Ziebertz, Hans‐georg Ziebertz•ARTICLE•Journal of Empirical Theology•2017

Culture and religion are both collective phenomena. Social identity theory shows how both can function as a connective frame of reference for a certain group of human beings. Frames are unique; nevertheless, different frames can overlap each other. In this research, both big categories will be used to explore if and how they predict attitudes towards the social importance of religious institutions. Religious institutions are guided by religious a…

  • Religion as a Predictor for the Support of Judicial Human Rights

    Hans-Georg Ziebertz, Hans‐georg Ziebertz•ARTICLE•Journal of Empirical Theology•2017

Human rights are the cornerstones of modern liberal democracies, but this does not mean that they can be taken for granted. Human rights need the support of the people. But how willing are people to support them? This question points to the problem of the legitimacy of human rights. This research paper focuses on judicial human rights such as freedom from torture, the rights of accused persons and the inviolability of the home. A quantitative, em…

  • Freedom of Religion in the 21st Century: A human rights perspective on the relation between politics and religion

Hans-Georg Ziebertz, Hans‐georg Ziebertz et al.•BOOK•Freedom of religion in the 21st…•2016

Freedom of religion consists of the right to practice, to manifest and to change one’s religion. The modern democratic state is neutral towards the variety of religions, but protects the right of citizens to practice their different religious beliefs. Recent history shows that a number of religious claims challenge the neutral state. This happens especially when secularity is rejected as the basis of the modern state. How can conflicting interpre…

    Hans-Georg Ziebertz, Hans‐georg Ziebertz•ARTICLE•Journal of Beliefs and Values•2016

This article focuses on political human rights and on the empirically assessed legitimation of these rights. This research considers the rights of refugees, the active and passive right to vote, and the right of protest. Given that the research is empirical research, respondents are requested to express agreement, disagreement or neutrality. The assumption is that contextual factors influence people’s assessment of rights. One contextual factor i…

  • The Public Significance of Religion

    Open Access•Leslie J Francis, Hans-Georg Ziebertz•BOOK•The public significance of religion•2011

This book reflects on the idea that religion represents a force in the public realms of society. The empirical evidence reveals a regained relevance for and commitment to religion re-emerging in secularized countries, but also that it does so in a new form: unexpected, foreign, and maybe even dangerous. If religion regains public significance in social debates, what are its characteristics in terms of topics and interests, actors and parties? How…

  • Religious Pluralism and Religious Education

    Hans-Georg Ziebertz, Hans‐georg Ziebertz•ARTICLE•Journal of Empirical Theology•1993

When thinking of alternatives for denominational religious teaching, it always includes answering the question about the relating discipline. In this contribution, the question is which theological horizon justifies the established type of denominational teaching as practised in Germany, and which theological justifications for alternative concepts of teaching are involved. In addition, it is also necessary to investigate the actual importance of…

  • Representations of Church Among Young Theologians

    Hans-Georg Ziebertz, Hans‐georg Ziebertz•ARTICLE•Journal of Empirical Theology•1996

Since 1995, so-called 'wishes of churchgoers' have been implemented in a number of European countries. In these adjustments a fundamental church reform is demanded, especially in the fields of women's ordination, celibacy, having a say in bishop appointments, sexual ethics and the association with divorced - and remarried people. The list with critical remarks is long, which explains the tension between the church as it is desired and the church …

Hans-Georg Ziebertz, Friedrich Schweitzer et al.•BOOK•The Human Image of God•2001

A new wave of religious energy is sweeping through the western nations. Although God is disappearing from religious discourse in western culture, both as a word and as a concept, there is a definite undercurrent of religious ardour, which is growing in strength. It focuses all the more attention on the issue: what or who is God in the modern era? This is the question examined through systematic studies, practical theology and empirical research, …

Based on Batson's model, religiousness is classified into intrinsic, extrinsic and quest orientations. The religiousness of students of theology and students in other fields was found to differ significantly in the three dimensions. Non-theologians tended to ascrib…

  • Normativity and Empirical Research in Pra Ctical Theology

    Hans-Georg Ziebertz, Hans‐georg Ziebertz•ARTICLE•Journal of Empirical Theology•2002

In research, normativity is 'unavoidable' because when a particular problem (or facets of a problem) is chosen and the decision for a concrete project is made, other problems (or facets) are excluded. Furthermore, unavoidable normative goals are connected to every research project. It can also be a matter of direct goals which relate to an immediate purpose or of indirect goals which refer to the indirect purpose of a research project. In the end…

These findings are consistent with those from a series of studies employing t…
