Ageism and Covid-19: What does our society’s response say about us?
The goal of this commentary is to highlight the ageism that has emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic. Over 20 international researchers in the field of ageing have contributed to this document. This commentary discusses how older people are misrepresented and undervalued in the current public discourse surrounding the pandemic. It points to issues in documenting the deaths of older adults, the lack of preparation for such a crisis in long-term ca…
Links between psychological disengagement from school and different forms of self-esteem in the crucial period of early and mid-adolescence
The purpose of this study was to test the links between psychological disengagement from academics and self-esteem during two different periods of adolescence. Previous research provided mixed findings on the links between both psychological disengagement mechanisms (i.e., discounting and devaluing) and self-esteem. To clarify this relationship, global self-esteem as well as self-esteem in school attainment and social domains were assessed among …
Social Change in Mongolia and South Africa: The Impact of Relative Deprivation Trajectory and Group Status on Well-Being and Adjustment to Change
The long and winding road: Grades, psychological disengagement and motivation among female students in (non-)traditional career paths
Diversity policy, social dominance, and intergroup relations: Predicting prejudice in changing social and political contexts
In contrast to authors of previous single-nation studies, we propose that supporting multiculturalism (MC) or assimilation (AS) is likely to have different effects in different countries, depending on the diversity policy in place in a particular country and the associated norms. A causal model of intergroup attitudes and behaviors, integrating both country-specific factors (attitudes and perceived norms related to a particular diversity policy) …
Profound organizational change, psychological distress and burnout symptoms: The mediator role of collective relative deprivation
The reasons underlying some individuals’ negative reactions to profound societal and organizational changes are still unclear. We argue that collective relative deprivation (i.e., feelings of discontent arising from group-based threat) mediates the relationship between perceptions of change and employees’ psychological reactions. Specifically, we tested the hypothesis that when employees perceive organizational change to be negative and rapid, th…
Dramatic Social Change in Russia and Mongolia: Connecting Relative Deprivation to Social Identity
Two studies assess people's reactions in the midst of dramatic social change. The studies examine consequences of social change in Russia and Mongolia after the dismantlement of the Soviet Union. They focus on the impact of social changes that are numerous, negative, and rapid. Specifically, an integration of relative deprivation and social identity theories is proposed. According to hypotheses, it is found that the more people perceive social ch…
L'invisible qui blesse: Une etude traitant de la gestion des conflits et de l'equite en emploi dans le cas des minorites visibles au Canada
This study investigates, among companies covered by the Canada Employment Equity Act, the hidden side of numerical progress of visible minorities achieved through the implementation of employment equity plans. More specifically, the purpose of this study is to determine whether companies with the best perfor mance in terms of the act have recognized the potential for conflict associated with the integration of visible minorities through employmen…
Policewomen Acting in Self-Defense: Can Psychological Disengagement Protect Self-Esteem From the Negative Outcomes of Relative Deprivation
The role of 2 components of psychological disengagement (discounting and devaluing) in the relation between personal relative deprivation and self-esteem was explored in 3 samples of policewomen. Path analyses conducted with the 3 samples revealed that stronger feelings of personal relative deprivation resulted in stronger discounting of work evaluations, which in turn led to devaluing the importance of police work. A negative relation between di…

Reactions of Beneficiaries to Preferential Treatment: A Reality Check
This study investigates the reactions of men from minority groups and White women who were selected through preferential treatment. The selection procedure allowed for group membership to be taken into account only after the qualifications of candidates were successfully established. Participants, 76 men from minority groups and 170 White women, worked as bus drivers or maintenance workers, which were the two job categories targeted by the affirm…
Neosexism: Plus Ça Change, Plus C'est Pareil
A scale designed to tap into a new type of gender prejudice, called neosexist beliefs, is proposed. Two studies investigating antecedents and consequences of neosexism were conducted. In the first study, a predictive model was tested with a sample of 130 male students. It was found, according to hypotheses, that considerations of collective interest (CI) and old-fashioned sexism had an impact on neosexism. However, only the latter and CI triggere…
