  • The interaction between vowel quality and quantity in the Khanty language

Timofey V Тimkin, Timofey V Timkin et al.•ARTICLE•Sibirskii Filologicheskii Zhurnal•2026

This paper examines tongue movement during vowel production in the Kazym dialect of the Khanty language, captured via ultrasound intraoral imaging and synchronous audio recordings of two native speakers. Vowels were recorded in monosyllabic, bisyllabic, and polysyllabic wordforms and annotated with phonetic transcription. Articulatory movements were synchronized with sound boundaries derived from acoustic data. Tongue shapes were extracted for st…

  • Palatal coarticulation in the Altai language according to ultrasound data in a dynamic aspect

    Timofey V Тimkin, Timofey V Timkin•ARTICLE•Sibirskii Filologicheskii Zhurnal•2024

The paper explores the movement of the tongue dorsum in phonetic words of the Altai language. The data were collected using Articulate Instruments equipment and Articulate Assistant Advanced software, employing the ultrasound imaging technique. The focus was on several monosyllabic lexemes with a “plosive vowel nasal” structure. Every word was recorded three times in an isolated context. The audio recording, synchronized in time with the ultra-so…

  • First syllable vowels in Surgut Khanty according to the ultrasonography data

    Timofey V Тimkin, Timofey V Timkin•ARTICLE•Sibirskii Filologicheskii Zhurnal•2022

This paper describes the Surgut Khanty vowel articulation by ultrasonography methods. 193 vowel segments were sampled by Articulate Instruments equipment and processed with Articulate Assistant Advanced software. 97 consonant segments were recorded to estimate a contact influence of vowels on consonants. The data were collected from a woman, a Tromagan dialect native speaker born in 1970. The tongue contours were analyzed by certain features: the…
