Robust portfolio optimization: A stochastic evaluation of worst-case scenarios
This article presents a new approach for building robust portfolios based on stochastic efficiency analysis, by using the Chance Constrained Data Envelopment Analysis (CCDEA) model and periods of market downturn, i.e. worst-state market. The model is able to accommodate investors who exhibit different risk behaviors and the empirical analysis is done on assets traded on the Brazil Stock Exchange, B3 (Brasil, Bolsa, Balcão). Estimation of green bond premiums On the Chinese secondary market
Green bonds have gained prominence on China's capital market as tools that help to fuel the transition to a climate-resilient economy. Although the issuance volume on the Chinese green bond market has been growing rapidly in recent years, the impact of the green label on bond pricing has not been studied adequately. Therefore, this paper investigates whether this newly developed financial instrument offers investors in China an attractive yield c…

Contemporary trends in party organization: Revisiting intra-party democracy
Party organization has regained a new momentum in the party literature over the past decade. In this context, we review the most important advances in the literature and critically examine issues such as: the link between party organization literature and organizational theory literature, party organization and intra-party democracy, and between party organization on paper and in reality. We ascertain the need for more conceptual clarifications i…

The analysis uses a comprehensive dataset covering price data for 32 relevant traded titles over the period 2003-2015. Main contribution of this article is a combination of minimum spanning tree and hierarchical tree approaches with expert economic understanding of biofuels market leading to iden…
Manifestos and the “two faces” of parties: Addressing both members and voters with one document
It is commonplace to see references to parties’ manifestos as their written issue “profiles,” and changes in such documents as constituting changes in the parties’ “images” or “identities,” with the latter terms often used interchangeably to capture the role of platforms. This article argues, however, that projection of a party’s “image” and its “identity” are two different functions for a manifesto, not just one, and that it is important for the…
Price Co-Movement between Biodiesel and Natural Gas
We study relationship between biodiesel, as a most important biofuel in the European Union, relevant feedstock commodities and fossil fuels. Our main interest is to capture relationship between biodiesel and natural gas. They are both used either directly as a fuel or indirectly in form of additives in transport. Therefore, our purpose is to find price linkage between biofuel and natural gas to support or reject the claim that they compete as alt…
The Impact of Renewable Energy Sources on the Czech Electricity Transmission System
This paper provides the first academic economic simulation analysis of the impact of increase in predominantly German wind and solar energy production on the Czech electricity transmission network. To assess the exact impact on the transmission grid, updated state-of-the-art techno-economic model ELMOD is employed. Two scenarios for the year 2025 are evaluated on the basis of two representative weeks. The first scenario is considered as baseline …
The Factors Influencing the Participation of Women in Microfinance
This paper investigates the possible reasons why many microfi nance institutions (MFIs) have gradually experienced a decrease in the share of female borrowers in their portfolios over the last few years. We confi rm that the share of women may be decreasing due to the growing proportion of low-income inhabitants in the area and unpaid family workers. Our results further show that the share of women is also strongly dependent on employment policy …

Microfinance Revolution: Controversies and Challenges
This article provides a brief but comprehensive overview of microfinance academic literature with emphasis on recent innovations, trends and efficiency. In particular, we focus on controversial issues of microfinance, such as commercialization, regulation, interest rate policy and the balance between outreach and performance of MFIs. In summary, the findings of the reviewed literature underline the great improvement in the microfinance field that…
Czech Photovoltaic Energy: Model Estimation of The Costs of its Support
The article is focused on the total historical and future costs of supporting photovoltaic elektricity generation in the Czech Republic. The model estimation of these costs is accompanied by methodologically unified comparison with cost of the support of other renewable energy resources. We find that as long as the goals of Czech National Action Plan for Renewable Energy will be implemented, the costs on photovoltaics support will account for mor…
Modeling Interconnections within Food, Biofuel, and Fossil Fuel Markets
The interconnections within food, biofuel and fossil fuel markets are first described in the context of biofuels technologies and economic policy framework. Consequently, the econometric analysis consisting of Johansen cointegration, error correction model, vector autoregression and Granger causality is applied to price series of 12 biofuel related commodities. While a number of equilibrium relationships are found across the examined\nmarkets sug…
Determinants of Profitability of Polish Rural Micro-Enterprises at the Time of EU Accession
Rural micro-enterprises are an important factor in sustainable rural development in post-transitional Eastern Europe. This paper deals with determining the key factors influencing profitability in rural micro-enterprises in Poland. The research design was based on a questionnaire survey of 300 rural micro-enterprises in the food-processing sector in rich and poor Polish provinces. The analysis carried out in this study is centered around the Poli…
Inefficient Credit Rationing and Public Support of Commercial Credit Provision
Credit contracting between a lender with market power and a small start-up entrepreneur may lead to the rejection of projects whose expected benefits are higher than their total costs when adverse selection is present. This inefficiency may be eliminated by government support in the form of credit guarantees or interest-rate subsidies. The principal-agent model of this paper compares different forms of government support and concludes that credit…
Gravity and Fiscal Models of Government Support of Export Credit in the Czech Republic
The article deals with the export credit promotion in the Czech Republic. The econometric analysis of the gravity model of Czech trade shows that the credit support provided by specialized government agency, Czech Export Bank, has a positive but statistically weak influence on export. The other determinants of the Czech export in our model are GDP, distance, gross fixed capital formation, and policy risk. The comparison of estimated tax revenues …

Performance, leadership, factions and party change: An empirical analysis
This article reports the first empirical findings based on data from a major study of party change. Hypotheses are developed linking party change to both internal and external factors. The data provide support for the conclusion that electoral performance alone is not sufficient as an explanation for parties' decisions to change, and that new leaders and/or dominant factions may indeed make a difference. This leads the authors to suggest that 'th…
Changes in Party Identity: Evidence from Party Manifestos
Political folklore holds that political parties often try to change their images following a disastrous election defeat. This paper inquires into the truth of this common assumption through a systematic analysis of manifestos promulgated by eight parties in Britain, Germany and the USA prior to national elections in the 1950s through 1980s. Each election was classified as triumphal, gratifying, tolerable, disappointing or calamitous from the stan…

An Integrated Theory of Party Goals and Party Change
The authors present a theory that seeks to explain why parties change their political strategies, organizational characteristics and issue positions. Whereas most of the existing literature on party change deals with party systems, the focus here is on individual parties. Whereas much of the literature views parties as responding more or less gradually to socioeconomic change, change is here regarded as a discontinuous outcome of specific party d…

Formalizing and Testing Duverger's Theories on Political Parties
Maurice Duverger's Political Parties, written more than three decades ago, remains the most prominent source of hypotheses on parties and party systems. Although many years have passed since its publication, no one has formalized Duverger's main hypotheses on political parties and subjected them to empirical test. This article identifies Duverger's key concepts on party structure, links the concepts in 19 formal bivariate propositions, operationa…

A Note On Measures of Party System Change
In this symposium Mogens Pedersen argues against measuring party system change by comparing static measures of “fractionalization, ” and proposes a measure based on changes in party strength from time 1 to time 2. Shankar Bose proposes a related measure of party system change that combines changes in strength with changes in party continuity over time. This article compares their measures as applied to data from ten party-systems
