  • Earth pigments and magnificent Stone Age burials on the shores of Lake Burtnieks

Open Access•Vanda Haferberga, Artis Kons et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeologia BALTICA•2025

This study aims to investigate the availability of earth pigments in the Lake Burtnieks area in Latvia and to analyse the use and symbolic significance of ochre during the Stone Age. Within the study, potential earth pigment samples were collected during the survey. These samples were analysed by laboratory methods — X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy — and compared to ochre samples obtained from archaeologic…

  • Tracing the Onset of Agriculture Through Phytolith Analysis at the Abora I Neolithic Settlement, Eastern Latvia

Open Access•Normunds Stivrins, Gunita Zariņa et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2025

Phytolith analysis was applied for the first time in Latvian archaeology to investigate plant use at the Abora I settlement, one of the key Late Neolithic sites in the Lubāns Wetland, eastern Latvia. Phytoliths were extracted from sediments, pottery sherds, grinding stones, and human teeth in order to assess evidence for cereal-type grasses and plant processing. A diverse range of phytolith morphotypes was identified, including rondel and bilobat…

  • Inhilldaugar

Open Access•Jens Schneeweiß, Vanda Haferberga et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2024

Combining non- and minimally invasive archaeological survey, geomorphological methods and linguistic studies enables a better understanding of the dynamic use of the Daugava waterway from the Bronze to the Viking ages. Results indicate a common origin period of many fortified settlements and also identify research questions about cultural fluctuations in the Baltic-Slavic-Scandinavian contact area

  • Dietary Practices During the Late Neolithic and the Bronze Age in the Territory of Latvia

Open Access•Vanda Visocka, Gunita Zariņa et al.•ARTICLE•Latvijas Vēstures Institūta Žurnāls•2023

This paper deals with the identification and comparison of dietary practices and their changes from the Late Neolithic to the Late Bronze Age in two different ecosystems – the lower reaches of the Daugava river and Lake Lubāns wetland. Zooarchaeological, palaeobotanical, and stable isotope evidence of chemical elements were used. The obtained results show that the beginning of early farming in Latvia can be observed in the late Neolithic period, …
