  • OSL dating of glacial outburst flood deposits in NE Poland and their bleaching problem inferred from the landform-sediment associations and regional context

Open Access•Edyta Kalińska, Piotr Weckwerth et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2025

A continental-type glacial flood termed the Suwałki megafloods took place in NE Poland during the last glaciation and significantly transformed the proglacial area. This study aims, for the first time, to establish the chronology of this flood. Twenty-two sediment samples from two meltwater spillways were dated by optically stimulated luminescence. Sixteen ages from the flood megadunes are between 83 ± 11 ka and 16.9 ± 0.9 ka, whereas six ages fr…

  • Inhilldaugar

Open Access•Jens Schneeweiß, Vanda Haferberga et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2024

Combining non- and minimally invasive archaeological survey, geomorphological methods and linguistic studies enables a better understanding of the dynamic use of the Daugava waterway from the Bronze to the Viking ages. Results indicate a common origin period of many fortified settlements and also identify research questions about cultural fluctuations in the Baltic-Slavic-Scandinavian contact area

  • What does transverse furrow train in scabland-like topography originate from? The unique records of upper-flow-regime bedforms of a glacial lake-outburst flood in NE Poland

Open Access•Piotr Weckwerth, Edyta Kalińska et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2022

  • Glacier Activity and Meltwater Dynamic in Landscape Evolution and Its Transformation

Open Access•Piotr Weckwerth, Edyta Kalińska et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2022

  • Does glacial environment produce glacial mineral grains? Pro- and supra-glacial Icelandic sediments in microtextural study

Open Access•Edyta Kalińska, Kristaps Lamsters et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2022

  • Shifting Shores and Stone Age Settlement

Valdis Bērziņš, Edijs Breijers et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Archaeology•2022•References: 8

This article considers a newly developed model of Holocene shoreline displacement in the southern part of the former Ventspils Lagoon of the Baltic Sea basin (present-day western Latvia) in relation to data from previous and new archaeological research in the area, assessing the changing pattern of Stone Age settlement and resource utilisation during the Mesolithic and Neolithic. An extensive lagoon was formed at the time of the maximum level of …

  • Late-Holocene relative sea-level changes and palaeoenvironment of the Pre-Viking Age ship burials in Salme, Saaremaa Island, eastern Baltic Sea

    Open Access•Triine Nirgi, Ieva Grudzinska et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2021•References: 7

Two unique Pre-Viking Age ship burials were found from Salme village, Saaremaa Island, eastern Baltic Sea, containing remains of seven men in the smaller and 34 men in the larger ship. According to the archaeological interpretations, these ships belonged to a viking crew possibly from the Stockholm-Mälaren region, eastern Sweden. Geoarchaeological research was conducted in the area to reconstruct Late-Holocene relative sea-level (RSL) changes and…

  • Luminescence dating of aeolian–coastal events on the Kristianstad plain, SE Sweden

    Open Access•Edyta Kalińska, Edyta Kalińska-Nartiša et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 16

Aeolian–coastal sediments and landforms are excellent palaeoenvironmental archives, but chronological studies of coastal records are scarce in Sweden. In this study, we provide luminescence and radiocarbon ages of aeolian activity and coastal landscape evolution on the Kristianstad plain, SE Sweden, based on the investigations of two foredunes and two inland dunes at Åhus and Vittskövle. Additionally, we do a laboratory intercomparison of five yo…

  • Age and sedimentary record of inland eolian sediments in Lithuania, NE European Sand Belt

    Open Access•Edyta Kalińska, Edyta Kalińska-Nartiša et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2015

We present a study based on four inland eolian locations in Eastern, Central and Southeastern Lithuania belonging to the northeastern part of the ‘European Sand Belt’ (ESB). Although there have been several previous studies of the ESB, this north-eastern extension has not been investigated before in any detail. The sedimentary structural–textural features are investigated and a chronology was derived using optically stimulated luminescence on bot…
