  • The Bible

Hannibal Hamlin, Andrew Hiscock et al.•BOOK•Oxford Handbook of Early Modern…•2017

The Bible was at the heart of the early modern culture of translation, and the English language was affected by the efforts of William Tyndale, Miles Coverdale, and others to properly render the Bible’s original Hebrew and Greek. Since understanding and following the Bible was necessary to salvation, and the Bible is often difficu…

  • My tongue shall speak: The voices of the psalms

    Open Access•Hannibal Hamlin•ARTICLE•Renaissance Studies•2015

This article examines the poetics of voice in early modern psalm translation. The voices of the psalms are further complicated when they are read or sung by Christians, either individually or collectively. Writers since the patristic period have encouraged Christians to speak the psalms as if t…

  • Psalm Culture in the English Renaissance: Readings of Psalm 137 by Shakespeare, Spenser, Milton, and Others

    Open Access•Hannibal Hamlin•ARTICLE•Renaissance Quarterly•2002•References: 5

Psalm 137, “By the Waters of Babylon we sat down and wept, “ one of the most widely known biblical texts in Renaissance England, provided consolation for spiritual and political exiles, as well as giving Shakespeare, Spenser, and Milton language in which to express such alienation — language especially powerful for poets, since the psalm troped alienation as the inability to sing. The Psalm's closing cry for vengeance, seen as un-Christian by som…
