Empirical support for the concept of the inexpressive male is reviewed and theoretical explanations for male inexpressiveness are presented. In addition, implications of male inexpressiveness for relationships are considered. Affective Self-Disclosure and Marital Adjustment
Based upon responses to questionnaries by 162 university married-housing couples (324 persons), equity theory was used to explain the relations between affective self-disclosure and marital adjustment. Specifically, it was found that the greater the discrepancy in partners' affective self-disclosure, the less was an individual's marital adjustment. Empiricism, Symbolic Realism, and the Mystique of the Extreme
The empiricist/symbolic realist debate in the sociology of religion, as well as the broader objectivist/subjectivist controversy in social science, suffers from the mystique of the extreme. Emphasis has been placed on the two approaches as opposing alternatives, an either-or choice. This study is based on interviews regarding attitudes toward birth control pills for men vasectomy and birth control pills for women. Responses are from 93 lower-class males (9 1/2 years education $4500 per year income average age 39 married 15 years 41% while and 59% Black mostly Protestant). 47% objected to use of a male pill 51% objected to a female pill 59% objected to vasectomy. The findings from a study of a sample of 148 nursing care homes in the state of Georgia suggest, contrary to expectations, that nursing care homes have more adequate personnel and facilities in rural than in urban areas. This finding is explained by the fact that more medical care nursing homes are owned by medical doctors and are more likely to be located in rural rather than urban areas. Sociometry is used to identify and study social relationships and group formations within an inclusive sample of Protestant ministers (N = 39) in a medium-size city. Change is viewed as a process of evolving meanings. Fichter's 1954 typology of Roman Catholic parishioners is examined in light of this view. Data were collected in a non-traditional Roman Catholic parish, after the changes brought about by the Second Vatican Council.
