    Johannes Endres•ARTICLE•The Germanic Review Literature…•2024

  • Hans Blumenberg and Leonardo

    Johannes Endres•ARTICLE•New German Critique•2022•References: 13

Hans Blumenberg's, frequently oblique, reflections on art rank among the most erudite in twentieth-century theories of art. The following investigations focus especially on his views on the visual arts as they unfold from his critical reception of Leonardo da Vinci's art and science. At the center of such a reception stands a preeminent image concept of the Renaissance, the "window image," and its epistemological implications, which Blumenberg co…

  • Vampires and the Orient in Goethe's “Die Braut von Corinth”

    Open Access•Johannes Endres•ARTICLE•The German Quarterly•2020

In his poem “Die Braut von Corinth” (1797), Goethe introduces the figure of the vampire as an early agent of his concept of “Weltliteratur.” As such, his female vampire challenges critical assumptions of a cultural divide between Christian and “pagan” religions, vampire believers and non‐believers, and finally Western and Eastern literatures. Instead, Goethe's “Braut” offers herself as a specimen of literary and cultural hybridity in a textual fo…

  • Friedrich Schlegel-Handbuch

    Open Access•Johannes Endres•BOOK•Friedrich Schlegel-Handbuch•2017

  • Meaningful Complexity: Goethe’s Concept of Similarity

    Johannes Endres•ARTICLE•Modern Language Notes•2015

Meaningful Complexity:Goethe’s Concept of Similarity Johannes Endres1 (bio) My following considerations will explore the relationship between complexity and similarity. Both concepts have been highlighted in recent scholarship as pivotal in various respects, and they are crucial to a number of discourses that refer to these notions for different reasons and to different ends. The concepts’ modern careers are closely tied to a shift in epistemolog…

    Open Access•Johannes Endres•ARTICLE•Behemoth•2008

  • Diderot, Hogarth, and the Aesthetics of Depilation

Johannes Endres, Joel Golb et al.•ARTICLE•Eighteenth-Century Studies•2004•Cited by: 2•References: 1

The corporeal ideal of a female form free of body hair has a long tradition in Western thought, originating in antiquity and culminating in the eighteenth century. Early-modern discourses on art, aesthetics, cultural theory, and anthropology explicitly defend the ideal of the naked, depilated woman with reference to antique depictions of Venus. Denis Diderot's speculations on the origins of the hairless female body are exemplary for the eighteent…
