This chapter provides a countermemory and counterdiscourse to the master historiographical narratives of Japan’s “surprise attack” on the United States during World War II. By foregrounding the Hawaiian naming of Pu’uloa, the imposed colonial renaming of Pearl Harbor is unsettled.
