Peroxisome proliferators induce hepatocellular carcinomas in rodents by an unknown mechanism. γ‐Glutamyltranspeptidase (GGT), a biochemical marker for identifying putative preneoplastic lesions in the liver, is highly expressed in phenobarbital (PB)‐promoted altered hepatic foci but not in those promoted by peroxisome proliferators.
