  • Characteristics and service use of NSW Quitline callers with and without mental health conditions

Open Access•Simone Lodge, Kate Bartlem et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

Introduction Smoking rates remain higher for people with a mental health condition compared to the general population and contribute to greater chronic disease burden and premature mortality. Quitline services offer telephone-based smoking cessation support to the public and have been shown to be effective. There is limited research exploring the characteristics of smokers with a mental health condition who use the Quitline or the impacts of usin…

Open Access•Julia Dray, Lauren Gibson et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

People living with mental health conditions experience a significantly reduced life expectancy compared to people without, largely linked to health risk behaviours and associated chronic disease. Community managed organisations (CMOs) represent an important setting in which to address health risk behaviours among people with mental health conditions. However, little is known about how these behaviours (smoking, poor nutrition, alcohol consumption…

  • Barriers to the Provision of Preventive Care to People Living with Mental Health Conditions: Self-Report by Staff Working in an Australian Community Managed Organisation

    Open Access•Tara Clinton‐McHarg, Lauren Gibson et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

People living with mental health conditions experience a reduced life expectancy largely due to a higher prevalence of chronic diseases. Addressing health risk behaviours, including tobacco smoking, inadequate nutrition, harmful alcohol consumption, and physical inactivity (SNAP), through the provision of preventive care, is recommended to reduce this burden. Community Managed Organisations (CMOs) may play an important role in providing preventiv…

  • The Effectiveness and Cost of an Intervention to Increase the Provision of Preventive Care in Community Mental Health Services: Protocol for a Cluster-Randomized Controlled Trial

Open Access•Caitlin Fehily, Emma McKeon et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Preventive care to address chronic disease risk behaviours is infrequently provided by community mental health services. In this cluster-randomised controlled trial, 12 community mental health services in 3 Local Health Districts in New South Wales, Australia, will be randomised to either an intervention group (implementing a new model of providing preventive care) or a control group (usual care). The model of care comprises three components: (1)…

    Open Access•Alexandra P Metse, Tara Clinton‐McHarg et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

The findings suggest associations between suboptimal sleep and smoking, risky alcohol consumption and physical inactivity, with the latter two perhaps being stronger among people with a mental health condition compared to those without such a condition. Poor sleep should be considered in interventions to address smoking, alcohol and physical activity; and vice versa. This study lends further support for the value of multirisk lifestyle interventi…

  • Self-reported suboptimal sleep and receipt of sleep assessment and treatment among persons with and without a mental health condition in Australia: A cross sectional study

Open Access•Alexandra P Metse, Caitlin Fehily et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

The prevalence of suboptimal sleep among persons with a mental health condition in Australia is significantly higher than those without such a condition, and rates of assessment and treatment are low for both groups, but higher for people with a mental health condition. Population health interventions, including those delivered as part of routine health care, addressing suboptimal sleep are needed

Open Access•Jacqueline Bailey, Tim Regan et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2019

Results suggest high engagement in health risk behaviours among carers of people with a mental illness, particularly with regards to harmful alcohol consumption. Findings suggest a need to develop and implement chronic disease prevention strategies. Further research with larger representative samples is needed to confirm findings

  • Supporting change in chronic disease risk behaviours for people with a mental illness: A qualitative study of the experiences of family carers

Open Access•Jacqueline Bailey, Jacqueline M Bailey et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2018

Additional support from general and mental health services accessed by family members is desired to assist carers to address the barriers to providing behaviour change support. Carers have the potential to support and extend health service interventions aimed at improving the chronic disease risk behaviours of people with a mental illness but may require additional information, and collaboration from services. Further research is needed to explor…

    Open Access•Alison Healey, Frances Kay‐Lambkin et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2013

There is a growing need to provide treatment for cannabis users, yet engaging and maintaining this population in treatment is particularly difficult. Although past research has focused on the importance of therapeutic alliance on drug treatment outcomes, this is the first study to examine the dimensions of therapeutic alliance for cannabis users compared with users of alcohol or other drugs in a naturalistic setting. The acceptability of Internet…

Guinea-Bissau is a small country in West Africa, and yet it managed to wrest its independence from Portugal back in 1973, at the cost of a long and bitter struggle against seemingly implacable odds. This was a time to be proud of, and there was also a moment about two decades ago, when it looked like a trendsetter for democracy. Since then things have gone seriously wrong, with a collapsing infrastructure, a dilapidated economy and a political st…

A vast amount of material on African affairs involving British interests can be found in these Papers. This essay deals with the way that the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 was presented in the Parliamentary Papers, specifically volume 13 of the Irish University Reprint Series entitled Colonies—Africa: Southern Africa General, 1878-80.
