Slave Law and the Politics of Resistance in the Early Atlantic World
Almost Home
In spring 1796, after eight months of war in the mountainous terrain of Jamaica, most of the village of Trelawney Town—a community of about 550 runaway slaves and their descendants—surrendered. They had resisted black militia and British regulars but they were frightened by the savagery of the bloodhounds imported from Cuba to defeat them. They could not have imagined the outcome that followed. The Jamaican government, fearing that the Maroon War…

Janet Polasky. Revolutions without Borders
R. R. Palmer’s two-volume The Age of the Democratic Revolution: A Political History of Europe and America, 1760–1800 (1959), written almost sixty years ago, captures the late eighteenth century as an era of social unrest and political possibility, driven by the notion of fundamental human equality. In more abbreviated form, Janet Polasky locates the ideals of this era in the American Revolution, in the Enlightenment faith in reason, and in the ra…

Enduring Patterns of Loyalist Study
More than a century ago, loyalist historians established the close relationship between the Atlantic colonies and the British Empire. Far from inevitable or natural, the mainland rebellion signaled a radical break from cherished customs, laws, and liberties. Two overlapping categories of scholarship examine the loyalist experience during the long revolutionary era. The first situates the loyalists alongside the rebels within the framework of the …
The roar of the bomb’
This article examines the role of violence in Shabash and ‘History of the Freedom Movement in India: The Ghadar Movement, 1913–1918’, two key texts of the Gadar Party, a US-based political party of South Asians that campaigned for Indian independence in the early twentieth century. In these texts, violence operates both as universal communication and as a critique of the possibility of universal communication. Acts of violence allow oppressed soc…

Neoliberalism as Doxa
This paper assesses, on the basis of key arguments from Pierre Bourdieu's work, how and why a consensus about the positive effects of globalization and liberalization could have established itself as a dominant discourse across Indian social space. Describing the discourse that validates globalization and economic liberalization as a particular worldview, which he terms ‘neoliberalism’, Bourdieu describes how neoliberalism establishes itself as a…
