Middle Chalcolithic ochre in pottery production from the Jordan Valley
The issue of ochre and its connections with pottery during the Chalcolithic has not been thoroughly investigated. This article presents a pilot study of six ochre samples extracted from pottery shards found at the well-stratified site of Tel Tsaf, Jordan Valley, Israel. The site plays a key role in discussions concerning the Middle Chalcolithic. The study demonstrates the potential of ochre analysis to determine the resource management strategies…
High mountains, late palaeolithic hunting. The case of Hučivá Diera Cave in the Tatra Mts. (West Carpathians)
New Stone Age Sites in the Podhale and Spiš
In the spring of 2025, a renewed surface reconnaissance was conducted in the eastern borderlands of Podhale and the Polish part of the Spiš region. The changing landscape, marked by increased vegetation and the transformation of arable fields into meadows, posed challenges for identifying previously known sites. Despite these difficulties, several new Stone Age sites were discovered, including artefacts made of radiolarite and Jurassic flint. The…
Social networks around the Orońsko flint mining area (Central-Southern Poland) during the Late Palaeolithic
Orońsko site 2 is a Palaeolithic shaft mine located in the area of chocolate flint deposits in Central-Southern Poland. This raw material was highly valued by Stone Age communities and widely distributed during the Late Palaeolithic. The mine is associated with the Arch-Backed Pieces (Federmesser) and Tanged Point Technocomplexes. This article aims to explore the connections between artefacts made of chocolate flint found at various Late Palaeoli…
Mountainous cultural crossroads
Recent decades have presented increased interest in provenance studies. However, such research in the sphere of mineral pigments are rare in archaeological dispute. The main aim of this paper is to portray the state of knowledge on that issue, followed by a presentation of ochre outcrops in the Carpathian Basin. The discussion is additionally illustrated by examples of 10 archaeological sites with described ochre traces from the Early Neolithic p…
Archaeological research of three caves in the Tatra Mountains in 2019-2023
This publication discusses the results of the project, which explains the mysterious lack of any traces of the Palaeolithic in the Tatra Mountains. Research undertaken in recent years in three caves – Obłazkowa and Dziura in the Polish Tatra and Hučivá diera Cave in the Slovak Tatras – have shown the destruction of sediments in Polish caves. Only in the Slovak cave was it possible to discover and partially examine a camp of the Late Paleolithic p…
The Department of Stone Age Archaeology of the Institute of Archeology of Jagiellonian University in the last half-century
The Department of Stone Age Archaeology of the Institute of Archeology of Jagiellonian University was established in 1985. Its first director was Professor Bolesław Ginter. In the first years, the focus was on fieldwork in Egypt. Further activity covered the Palaeolithic layers of caves in today’s Bulgaria (Bacho Kiro, Temnata) and Greece (Klissoura) and southern Poland (Ciemna and Obłazowa Caves). Upper Palaeolithic open sites in the Váh River v…
The Usage of Ochre at the Verge of Neolithisation from the Near East to the Carpathian Basin
The Usage of Ochre at the Verge of Neolithisation from the Near East to the Carpathian Basin
The Usage of Ochre at the Verge of Neolithisation from the Near East to the Carpathian Basin explores the cultural meaning of ochre among the societies of the Late Epipalaeolithic/Mesolithic and the Early Neolithic from the Levant to the Carpathian Basin. Firstly, the book attempts an accurate characterization of the material, ochre. Both its features as well as its possible outcrops and co-occurring minerals are outlined. The cultural background…
Hučivá Cave
This article discusses the objectives of the Stone Age Man in Caves of the Tatra Mountains project, which aims to explain the mysterious absence of evidence for the Palaeolithic in the Tatra Mountains of Eastern Europe. We present preliminary work from Hučivá Cave, which demonstrates clear traces of Magdalenian settlement within this region
HLC Project 2017. Jagiellonian University excavations in southern Jordan
The HLC (Heritage–Landscape–Community) archaeological metaproject, carried out since 2016 by the Jagiellonian University in cooperation with the Department of Antiquities, Ministry of Antiquities and Tourism, Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, targets the archaeological heritage of southern Jordan (Tafila region), focusing currently on remains of the Early Bronze Age and earlier cultures that were found in the region. The project has already identified…
